Interesting day out today.. it was flippin Scorchio for a start!! Topped out at about 37 degrees, mid-afternoon.
Leezx10r, Slow bro and I signed up for the 'Masterclass' level.
It was a bit of a slow start, no idea why we were asked to show up at 06:30. On the paperwork we were to be in the classroom for 40mins before getting out on track.
For some reason, this didn't end up happening so we literally just sat around in the pits chatting to each-other until our first session AT 10AM!!
There was a short brief beforehand telling us to 'connect the dots' with the cones they'd laid out, marking out turn in and apex points.
Ok, no problem.. will do:
That genuinely seemed to be the sum total of the formal, structured part of the training. We weren't too happy so Noel asked them repeatedly to give us an idea of back brake, when it should be used, why? etc etc.. no clear answer came about.. just "you can really use it anywhere".
Lee and I decided to ask them them a bit more about suspension & geometry set-up and how that translates to feel.. again, very foggy answers that didn't amount to much at all.
We also were all told to slow down as one of the coaches was finding it difficult to catch up and stay with us... None of us were on the ragged edge tho and I can't see the value of pussying around as all of your markers, lines and reference points are no longer valid. VERY annoying! Add this to a VERY substantial and dangerous speed difference between us and some of the other bikes out in 'Masterclass' and it was just not fun to be out there.
The one or two things they did feed back were largely due to South Circuit being an unfamiliar layout and something that a couple of sessions would easily have resolved on it's own. I'm always happy to take feedback about my lines and technique etc but there was simply nothing to go on. No IDEA how this is supposed to constitute a 'Masterclass'.
After three sessions or so, I'd have been ready to pack up but it was a great vibe in the pits with the boys. That and the promise of an R1 test was coming up!
WHAT A BIKE!! Felt very familiar as soon as I jumped on. It's sooo small and ridiculously fast. Far from putting the bike in rain mode, the Yamaha rep showed me how to change modes so I could find out for myself how the electronics work and how the power is put down. The first few laps I opted for a 'progressive power delivery' and the TC, wheelie and slide control dialed in a fair bit. Whilst the size meant I felt instantly comfortable on the bike, I could feel the electronics taking over pretty early in the corner and choking the power delivery a little.. time for full slick mode, FULL POWER and all electronics at the minimum setting before off - HOLY FOOKIN FOOK!! Massive grin, power for days and electronics only kicking in in If I tried something I shouldn't have. Power went down very cleanly and it was very agile. Felt like a crazy powerful R6 that was as chuckable, yet more stable. I LOVE THIS BIKE!![]()
I'll probably give 600s at least another season so I can develop my race craft further and hopefully creep down into the 39's. This is for sure the next bike for me tho, can't wait!!
Thanks heaps to Lee and Noel for the pit vibes, ended up having a top day thanks to you guys!! (and maybe a little thanks to the R1)![]()

The DNA boys let themselves down badly, with the races going looking for those finer points to make them feel safer and faster at very high speeds
I was very underwhelmed, when I booked in years ago for their expensive 1 on 1 training that never existed....it was 1 mentor(not coach) for each group, and all I got was your doing alright :-(

Pete Goddard was one, although he wasn't assigned to us. Obviously he knew his stuff but couldn't really communicate. The other was this guy:
No jokes!
Heaps friendly guy but not a career worth of masterclass experience to draw upon....

What level did you do last time? I had another mate there doing L2, he also thought it lacked structure and the variation of pace within groups was pretty bad there too... The L1 guys seemed to enjoy themselves tho. Pace was all pretty close and they seemed to spend a while talking through things with the guy that owns/runs it - Mark Mcveigh. He was a really nice guy, made us all feel very welcome.

I did the master class, with Pete Godard, It was me, a mate and another guy that was a fair bit slower. We agreed hed do a session with us, then a session with the other guy'which worked out well. We did a few session on lines and where to break later, then i asked about how to pass safer ( Motards everywhere on the south) was pretty beneficial, till i ran wide of T2 ( t6 gp) and doped it in the kitty litter... Mind you I was only doing 105's had a best of 104.59 till my gps went flat 4th session. I recon i would have improved a bit after that as well.
R you fucking kidding me? That was the coach???
I was at Wakefield the other week .. Me and the missus standing on the back straight .. And saw this crash... Not only was he running in second last in the 300's.. I ran it off there the lap before this one.. And came straight back round and did it again and fell off.. Then chucked a tanty! Haha.. Wat a fuckin joke
No jokes mate!
He said it was a false neutral thing. Some issue with gear selection that kept happening there.
No idea why he got so upset from that far back in the field tho!?

Ah well, was worth it for the spin on the R1!!
CSS, Bernie Hatton and Alex Cudlin seem to get the best feedback...

Well, yes indeed! Some of my biggest advancements in time have come from either chasing you or getting your feedback after you follow me or review my videos.
As I said to you yesterday, the motoDNA experience really highlighted that good observation and communication, are absolutely essential for imparting information and having it stick.
I think it's something you're really good at, mate and it's normally quite specific and relevant rather than generic things like 'more throttle, less brake' lol!!
Now, before your head gets too big.. here's me passing you on the outside of T1![]()

It'll come mate, you'll get there!
I think photos are a big help too. The latest official guy at Stay Upright, Tim Munro, seems to be pretty good but the previous guys, that MEGA had, were lazy at best and charged a fair bit for some pretty ordinary shots.
Such a shame they booted off people like Ray Oxford and Philip Veneris tho, some of their shots were a massive help when I was working on body position.

So, one of the coach's points was to follow them to get an idea of a good line and where to apex...
Guess which one is the 'Masterclass' coach/mentor and which is the paying student?!!

Sadly, that sounds about right for MotoDNA. We did one day with them ages ago (the same day Stevo did his so called one on one coaching) and it was a total clusterfuck. They couldn't organise a root in a brothel and are a total waste of money if you're hoping for any coaching and improvement. The thought of that muppet on the 300 as a coach has left me just shaking my head.Seriously, MotoDNA???? That's the best you could get????

Al Samuals isn't a bad option either, especially if you want help with bike set up. The faster guys seem to get better results from a day with Al than any of the other options. The fact that he doesn't ride with you makes him a cheaper option than other one on one training as well.
