    Thumb Brake, winter project

    And here it is!

I wish! After talking with a few of you fine gentleman (and ladies) at the track, I have really been interested in the benefits of starting to use the rear brake more.

I have tried it quite a few time, and fine the benefits really good for controlling the front end, but found it very tricky to use with my right foot.

So, thumb brake it is! But am not going to spend $800+ on one, so thought I would have a go myself.

I started looking at the designs that are on the market, and went from there!

As we all have, there's a bag a old crashed parts in the corner of the shed, and thought there could be some good options.

So I need something to clamp around the fork leg!

It's a bit big, so time for some weight reduction.

Offer the OEM rear master cylinder up, and adaptor plate time!

Time to see how it looks on the bike!

An old gear lever could work as a thumb lever!

So at first it looks ok, tight, but we all like that!
Time for some welding! Now my welding skills are between, low to average, but I have a Danny, this boy can weld.

    Flipped to the other side!

This is the type of projects Danny does through his business, he's very good!

Now at this point, all was looking OK, but after some more trial fitting the oem rear master was too big, and wouldn't work on full lock, so time for a rethink and time to look through the parts bin again.

    Rev 1.2.

    Trail fit.

So, the project is making good progress, next step:
    Order new brake line.
    Workout and order new bearings.
Change lever tip for better ergonomics for the thumb.

Anyway just wanted to share my little winter shed project.

Yes the foot pedal has gone, but the way I have built it gives me the option to put everything back if I change my mind.

Back in 08, on my CBR1000RR I had a cable over hydraulic controlled by a twist grip on the left bar. The cable went down to the foot pedal.
Worked but had to twist my wrist so far made it uncomfortable under heavy braking.

Cheers Owen. Yeh, will keep the updates coming through mate, still trying to think of a good option on the bearings, but am sure I can work something out.

If would have been nice to have both options, but since I didn't really use it in the oem location, for my simple mind it was easier just to move it all.

Cheers Nick. I don't mind being the guinea pig to see if it will work.
Plus as we all know, everything loves a build thread.

My brain always tries to convince me to do something like this, then it realises I am incapable. Now I can just watch what you do and pretend I am going to do the same.

Looks the goods mate! I need a Danny for some projects. Is the Danny plug and play? Or is a build required beforehand? Is the Danny portable?

A "Danny" is a mythical creature, who moves with the changing winds! He has also been known to disappear in a cloud of argon.

I going to do this to mine, but keeping the foot brake setup. You can get the proper setup from eBay UK cheapish if your prepared to wait a while, if you don't have a Danny handy. I was going to do it on my 600 as well but everywhere I set it up it hits something. Very frustrating.

If you run 2 master cylinders in the same circuit, the lower one will need its piston adjusted so far in that its compensating port is covered so when you apply pressure from the upper MC, it doesnt lust leak back out of the lower MC compensating port. You can also remove the reservoir from the lower MC.

In this pic, the upper MC is flowing through the lower MC compensating port and it would have to be drilled out so it would flow more.
Compensating ports are very small maybe 1.5mm diameter and that would slow down the action of the thumb brake.

Bearings done, did a few little steps in the shed today, but that's about it until the brake line and other parts arrive!

Realised last night, piggybacking 2 banjos on the pressure side of the lower MC wont work because when you operate the lower MC the fluid will just piss out of the top MC reservoir so the setup Slow bro showed is the only way it would work.

That is seriously impressive. I would love to be able to do this but realistically would probably just cough up the $800.
You know you will need a sticker on it like Dovi right?!

Well that little project is all complete apart from testing on the track.
New brake line arrived from Hel on Friday as did the new m10x1.00 banjo with bleed nipple and other little parts to finish off the project.
Was a bugger to bleed, and probably didn't help with the line being 1550mm long!
But it's all done, and the feel is great. Probably around 10-15mm of travel which feels good to me.
Here is a few final pics all installed.

Great, now look what you've done too...

But seriously, this is so awesome mate, I can't wait to hear how it goes. I don't have the skill to do this myself, and since (I'm assuming) your Danny is a one use item, I can't even borrow it to do some work to my bike.

Might have to ask satan, santa? To get me one of the $800 jobbies for xmas too.

    Sorry for the late reply.

So update: for first test out on the track, compared to being sat on the bike in the shed making bike sounds, it went well!

What I do need to change is the lever as I found it fouling on my hand and was a little distracting, so took the knob off and was great for the rest of the day.

Once I have changed the lever I may look at changing the leverage, as it could do with a little more travel, thus less force on my poor office hand 🏻

Yeah, I can imagine you'd find a knob distracting

So was your mind more free to think about and use the thumb lever as opposed to the foot?
Or, is it just a question of access on the right side turns?

    Thumb Brake, winter project

The knob was hitting my left hand, very uncommon feeling

Found it much better than using the foot brake, couldn't get used to that, but just need to work on placement so my knob don't foul again
