R6 build - brand new to racebike

I've got a build job going.... Brand new, never ridden R6 to fully sorted racebike. Some bits were supplied with the bike, and some I'm sourcing.

As delivered. Everything is soooooo clean!! It took twice as long as normal to strip it down, as I was worried about scratching it!!:

    Supplied bits:

The build is a bit out of order, as we are still waiting on parts to arrive. In the meantime, on goes the rearsets, engine covers, full Akra system, Ohlins TTX, and the new Annitori QS PRO quickshifter. The road tyres are staying on until it's been run in and dynoed:

The customer has asked for pretty much all the goodies, except engine work. Flashing and dyno mapping the ECU, then the usual stuff - race air filter, quickshifter, clipons, levers, steering damper, braided lines, Vesrah pads, 520 chain & sprockets, shark fin, lithium battery, stomp grip, painted fairings, smog blockoff, exup eliminator, tank sliders, lockwiring, forks revalved and resprung etc.

    Fun fun fun!!

Loving the HyperPro currently. Top design and quality, at a very reasonable price (particularly compared to Ohlins): https://www.motomummy.com/hyperpro/h...active-damper/

More goodies (and I won't need the sanding pad for the discs.... they are brand new!!).

Fitted the new Annitori QS PRO quickshifter, and a Motocell lithium battery (you'd swear the packet was empty, they are so light!).

+1 for the HyperPro. I love mine!
Plus it has both the words "Hyper" and "Pro" in it, so you know it's good

    Slowly slowly.

Smog block off plates on. Air filter in. Sidestand cutout taken care of. EXUP eliminator installed. Sexy cf tank sliders (although they are going to be hidden under the tank cover).

Finally, more progress! Chain and sprockets fitted. Shark fin mounted. Slicks fitted (this was going to wait, but things are a bit out of order due to the dyno not being available until 5th of Jan). Front end out for the fork revalve and respring.

ahh making me miss the R6 already...

then I think about how much fun I'm going to have with an extra 400ccs

Finally revalved the forks! I hope I can remember how all this goes back together......

And did some lockwiring. Oh, and did Wetty's trick of pouring litres of distilled water through the bike whilst it was running, to flush the coolant out. I can't guarantee there's no minuscule trace, but it's pretty good.

Finally got the bike back from the dyno yesterday, after a looooong delay. Got some custom spacers for the forks made up in the meantime, so that I could fit proper springs to the forks (the OEM R6 springs narrow at the top, meaning normal linear springs don't fit without an adapter). They look factory! Nice job, Rob H.

Bit disappointed to have to disassemble the front end and forks yet again, but finished it last night.

Now of course the ECU flash is broken and the bike won't start! But when it was going, the auto-blip, clutchless downshift function sounds unreal.

Custom code has an error in the tip-over switch circuit. Hopefully a relatively straight-forward fix, but it just adds delays. It's not a flashtune image.

I'm a bit disappointed at how poorly I've updated this build thread! I'm just giving myself an uppercut....

Braded lines and Vesrah pads went in. Vortex levers on, Superbike Source clip-ons fitted, Renthal race grips too.

    Came up a treat Marshy.

Any tips on fitting similar steering damper to a 2010 R6?
In other words..."What sort of trouble can I get myself into as a novice tinkerer trying to do it myself?"

Good question! You'll be fine; it's not all that difficult, but it requires a bit of attention to detail. There are a couple of things to take into account:

    1. You'll need a 36mm socket, for the headstem nut.
    2. The main bracket (between the front of the tank, the underside of the damper, and the headstem) needs to be the right way up. Depending on brand of damper, they can be either the same either way up, or they can be different lengths for 'up' and 'down' , so check the instructions.
    3. Check, check and check again the alignment of the new headstem nut/bracket. The bracket mounts on the headstem shaft, and you will most likely need washers under the bracket where the tank bolt goes through to get the height right on the bracket, so that the new headstem nut/bracket is 100% parallel with the top triple. It sounds complicated, but it's actually pretty obvious when you fit it all up. When you do up the tank bolt, it can pull down on the bracket between the tank and the headstem, and the bracket then rubs on the top triple, and can even bind up completely when you turn the bars. This is bad, m'kay?

I've just found a similar pic and added some scribbled notes.

In short, go for it, but check carefully for binding.

    Thanks for the advice.
I can see it already. I'll give it a go and then bring the bike to you to sort it out properly!

    100% yes!
Here's one of mine on 3 x really thick washers, plus the tank cover and it's T-washer!

Before putting the piston in, crank the head stem nut up a bit, then the tank bolt with bracket a bit.. and so on so that you're not cross threading the nut or bending the bracket and pinching the top triple.
As Marshy says, it'll be obvious once you've got it offered up into place!

Yep, I remember the 1st time I fitted the damper to the R6 and took it out only to come back to pits straight away thinking I had a flat tire... lol lesson learned
