    Help: Brake Drag

    Hi Guys,

I am having an issue with brake drag on my front end, I have taken the calipers off and the wheel and it spins freely, but as soon as grab the brake and let off, the pads drag.

I've cleaned the calipers so there isn't any issue there, not sure what is going on, I readjusted my forks for alignment last night so I don't think it is that either.

I took the pin springs out as well, but no dice on that either

    Cheers,
    Andy

Thats a pretty common gixxer problem, mate. The pistons will be dirty, and not freely moving in and out of the calipers. You need to clean them thoroughly, one caliper at a time (leave the other one on the disc), by removing the pads, then pumping the pistons out, cleaning all down and around them, then pushing them back in to the caliper and repeat and repeat. Try not to actually pop the pistons all the way out, our you'll get brake fluid everywhere and let air into the system.

Whilst it's not fantastic for the seals, a good spray with brake cleaner is usually the only way to get them properly clean. Doing them with something more seal-friendly (Simple Green, or just brake fluid etc) often just won't do the job properly.

    Small world ...

I bought the brake rebuild kit for my old gixxer after watching Delboy's Garage ... I'm a noob, and found his little tips most useful ... I was going to do a rebuild after last race meet.

I reckon Marshy should do YT video's for R6's ... put the knowledge into the matrix

I had a quick look at his pistons last time at the creek. They didn't look dirty. The hose to his master cylinder had a big kink in it. I thought this might be holding pressure.

    Have changed reservoir

Yep, what Marshy said. Sometimes you just have to do them a few times before they are good. I just do mine as regular maintenance.

Last time I cleaned my pistons I took the pads out put a 10mm Allen key between the pistons & pumped them out until they held the Allen key. Spayed them with mr sheen a few times & them cleaned them with an old tooth brush. Then wiped them clean with a rag. Not sure if this is the correct way but worked for me.

That's why I took the pads out. It worked but I still don't know if it's the right way to do it.

Mr Sheen worked, had to clean them twice.

I could probably give them another go as it isn't perfect but CBF

have you thought about swapping the calipers with another brand?

if you are happy with the rest of the bike, this might be an easier option

  22. #22
not a bad idea, i could swap to a set of R1 calipers pretty cheaply, just need to get spacers made

R6 calipers bolt straight on. Lots of Gixxer guys doing it.

Look at getting the whole braking system, including the master cylinder. The r6 set works really well.
