Adding a manual fan switch to a racebike

Racebikes run hot, and with water only in the radiator to comply with race rules, it's often useful to have the radiator fans come on earlier than the factory setting (103 degrees C on most bikes). Here's how to rig up a switch to turn the fans on - and have them stay on - when needed.

You will need:



A toggle switch. I use this from Jaycar: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ST0570. Picture below.
Some lengths of wire. Hook-up wire from Jaycar: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=WH3001
Heatshrink is nice to have for a neat job. Guess where from: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=WH5530
Electrical tape
Soldering iron

I have a similar set up to keep "the Tank" cool at the start of the races and at the end, although I leave it on all the time when it's a warm day or on track days....looks after the oil a bit more ;-)

Well marshy has inspired me to do the mod to the cbr . Just done a quick instal to see if it works ..

I will post it up once i get the pics sorted very soon for the cbr 600 rr using the existing light swich (high beam to turn on ) , very easy to do and puts the high beam light on the dash when manually turned on ...

It work really well. As soon as i finish the session and before head to the pitts I turn it on and it never went over 100C.

Went past Jaycar the other day and bought a missile switch just got to find some time to install now. Definitely a good idea.

I recently wired the fan switch to power direct from the battery when it is turned off.

I used the inline fuse rated at 10amp.

However turned it on and off a couple of times to test then the fuse blew.

Never had an issue when I was using a tapped "on" ignition source.

I thought the fan had a 7.5amp fuse from the factory?

Do I need a 15 amp inline or should the 10 suffice. (Not strong in knowledge in regards to this)

Edit saw the two fan fuses are 15amp

I'll get some 15amp ones tomorrow and see how they go

I have one integrated into my headlight high beam switch Rancell, you would have to ask JC how it was wired though, i have NFI lol
