So, I've heard the best thing for recovering after breaking your bones is to buy another bike!
Picked this guy up from an auction today...

http://i.imgur.com/125QVfm.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/drVGxQz.jpg

Pretty sure the front needs some attention, either that or it loves right handers...

http://i.imgur.com/vpVRKuI.jpg

Happily, removing the headlights etc. has already been taken care of by whatever it hit, but closer inspection shows a ding to the front left fork tube.

http://i.imgur.com/HPdYKhh.jpg

After checking oil and electrics etc, saw no reason not to boost up the battery and it started first try! :bounce:

http://i.imgur.com/T6CfdTx.jpg

Bit of a scuff on the right hand side. That's clearly written it off, best check the air box for oil...

http://i.imgur.com/i8e3hco.jpg

Ooooh. score! Already has a BMC filter in it.. pretty clean too!

http://i.imgur.com/2iiZgsK.jpg

Yep, just a bit of oil made it up but probably enough to make it cough out blue smoke for a while.. best clean it out.

http://i.imgur.com/rYpIdwG.jpg

Might as well do the smog block off while I'm in here...

http://i.imgur.com/Q8phWBO.jpg

Deffo need to take this god-awful thing off.. cheapest piece of junk I've ever seen!

http://i.imgur.com/NjHWReY.jpg

Stripped! Not bad for a night's work by an invalid! Now to go buy some fast things to put on it...:thumb:

Nice Owen - that's going to help your recovery! Is that a stock shock / spring?

Turbo

Thanks Rick! Yes, all bouncy bits are stock at this stage.
Hoping to re-create your Ohlins valved & rebuilt front end tho, as I've heard it's ACE!
Not sure about the back end yet...

Nice little catch for a project man. Similar condition to a Gixxer 6 that I helped a mate rebuild. It was surprisingly fun stripping it down and getting excited about replacing parts.
Good thing about project bikes is you can set your own timeline. Ain't no need to go broke buying everything in one hit.

Keep us updated! :bump2: I'm keen as chips to get myself a track R6, so eager to learn about more of their potential hidden secrets/flaws.

Thanks mate and YES! That worried me too. It appears to be the cheapest mid-pipe/cat eliminator on the planet and is made from the cheapest 'metal' I've ever seen. Once removed, the headers and rest of the bike are fine tho.

If I end up broke and homeless it's this forums fault.

A wee bit more progress on the build...

The old and bent front end is now completely off. The new front end was so clean and tidy, it made sense just to swap everything and not be worried about any potential issues.
http://i.imgur.com/HWukHZv.jpg

A good opportunity to get in to the spark plugs and swap them out...
http://i.imgur.com/0uCu5uK.jpg

Can't remember which ones I changed tho...
http://i.imgur.com/S6xaXvA.jpg

New intake and fairing stay are now fitted. Managed to find an intake with the intake temp sensor intact too!! Woohoo!

Case covers and race frame protections from GB

Carbon tank sliders, essential for the wide arse tank!

Lithium battery.. can't believe how little these things weigh?!!
http://i.imgur.com/qsYKqdR.jpg?1

Braided lines and SS Carbon rearsets...
http://i.imgur.com/sJv1fYK.jpg

New surround for the smashed up dash.. Only thing broken is the LCD speedo. Not super urgent and this one seems to do the trick.
http://i.imgur.com/WbO83e2.jpg

Got to finish the suspensions mods yet.. think we've got a shim stack sorted, just waiting on some custom guides to fit the new springs.

Another update on the build progress..

The bike sat outside at the wreckers for a while, it must have rained as the discs were not in great shape..

http://i.imgur.com/TDwvuuj.jpg

Whipped out the rotor hone and went to town on the discs...

http://i.imgur.com/vqjveou.jpg

They came up a treat and should make an excellent base layer when I put the Vesrahs in!

http://i.imgur.com/LRs0lrK.jpg

Next up was the exhaust system.

http://i.imgur.com/BSV0PEw.png

Took a grinder to the collector and saved myself about 10kg in the process!!

http://i.imgur.com/CtHCPuY.jpg

Then I ground off the thingamy bits so that the Y-Pipe would fit on...

http://i.imgur.com/Dnz2aVL.jpg

The headers were looking a little tired so I set about them with some metal polish.

http://i.imgur.com/lxGjuus.jpg

I think they came up pretty well and look great with the Arrow GP2 mid-pipe and muffler.

http://i.imgur.com/xcqSYQB.jpg

It's a decent length, all fitted up, so I'm hoping that'll translate to some good mid-range on the dyno!

http://i.imgur.com/HiUW6fz.jpg

If nothing else, I reckon it looks great!

Replaced the old, smashed fuel tank bracket with a shiny new one from Yamaha!

http://i.imgur.com/w11M7Xal.jpg

The front end smash left me without intake temp and pressure sensors so I had to find some new ones... Checking the wiring here.

http://i.imgur.com/QZutA7nl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/eIQIFEol.jpg

Then re-terminated, no error codes so - good to go!

http://i.imgur.com/PNDpbdWl.jpg

Next to make a custom, progressive quick throttle from some old PVC pipe. If you've not seen it done before, here's how it works:
First I had to cut out a section of the PVC pipe...

http://i.imgur.com/BDZOKNAl.jpg

... then glue it to the throttle tube...

http://i.imgur.com/0qGbQGNl.jpg

then a smaller section on top, glue that down...

http://i.imgur.com/ZYNiBUIl.jpg

then dremel to the required thottle delivery cam shape. In this case, the standard amount of throttle when cracked, to help avoid accidental high sides, then progressively getting more aggressive after that...

http://i.imgur.com/1McIo1Fl.jpg

Dremmel a wee slot for the throttle cable. This part will actually make it less snatchy than the oem throttle when first cracked...

http://i.imgur.com/lY4fN6Dl.jpg

Nibbler on the assembly to allow for the new shape...

http://i.imgur.com/6sX5vCol.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/S5pFNpFl.jpg

before putting it all back together....

http://i.imgur.com/dFOwq3Al.jpg

Chucked on some new levers...

http://i.imgur.com/8hEQEXFl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/dpdBC2Kl.jpg

Fitted a new racing front reservoir and bracket...

http://i.imgur.com/aoha1fgl.jpg

It's not a Honda but damn, I love the HRC rear reservoir tube... fitted.

http://i.imgur.com/LYN3UQfl.jpg

Scratching around for things to put on now! Probs off for a flash and dyno soon...

This can caused by some aftermarket rearsets (eg Vortex), when the angle of the piston is not dead-straight into the master cylinder. When you press the lever, does the piston move into the m/c exactly evenly, or on an angle?

Interesting comment, do you have braided lines? We were discussing the merits of oem lines on the rear brake to get a more progressive feel, just yesterday.
The 'squish' from the oem lines would make it less like a switch and give a bit more of a progressive feel to it.
I have the rear oem on my race bike and wanted to try braided on this build to see which I preferred.

Had the second round of track testing on Friday. She's just back from the dyno so I was keen to see what had changed.
Firstly, here's what we did:

ECU Flash & Tune -
Fuel Mapping
Throttle Mapping
Inlet/Butterfly Timing
Ignition Mapping
Exup/O2 Sensor Eliminated
Immobiliser Eliminated
Dash Gear Indicator Added
Thermo Fan Temp Lowered

Before I took it to be tuned, I actually thought the bike had more grunt. This was something of an illusion as the throttle curve was all over the shop and quite unpredictable. Given the right scenario, it may well have flicked me off. The tune made it more predictable as well as giving more mid-range and outright power, adding up to 30% more fuel in some spots.

O2 sensor plug

Preload and clickers dialled in for the front end, starting to feel pretty great!

Yes! It's far more predictable now and the power has significantly increased, right where I need it.
Couple that with the quick throttle and quick shifter - I'm cheering!!:flame:

The re-sprung shock has made a great difference to the back end too.
It was a bit wallowy before and struggled to drive forward, cleanly.
Now it's much tighter and also feels like a great improvement to the power going down. :peace:

It's sooooo close to being finished. There's a new quick-fill keyless fuel cap (love this) to go on then some lock wire and the fairings, which have unfortunately been held up.
Once I've the shiny new fairings go on, I'll be sure to update with the finished product!

The last step in getting rid of any keys was putting on a keyless fuel cap

http://i.imgur.com/UWC10kBl.jpg

This also has the added benefit of being able to fit my new quick pour fuel jugs.
These are super cool and have a measuring scale written upside-down on the bottle so you can see how much fuel you're loading!

Here it is all fitted up... you might also notice the NEW TANK COVER!

The fairings are finally here so they got fitted up and I reckon they look fantastic!
It's a WSBK paint job from a few years back that really caught my eye...
Adjusted slightly to leave room for name numbers and logos etc but here she is!

Just put on some Stomp Grips and some lock wire and she'll be ready to race!

Nah, still had the old fairings on so it stayed in the trailer.
Couldn't handle anybody else telling me I'd bought Spilly's old bike! Lol

got a few idea's up my sleeve, unlike anything anyone has ever seen on a race bike (hopefully) ;-) I'm leaning more towards a wrap, but still not 100% sure which avenue i'll take

Bike looks awesome dude, well done.

Will do, mate. I ran it on my car rims for more than a year without issue.
Even the wheel nuts were fine coated and taken on and off a few times.
The key was letting it set/dry for a long time before using.

So true. I should start a thread of all the bullshit I encounter with mine. The simplest of things keep turning into nightmares.. Had OEM sprockets put back on, go to fit the chain and discover its too short... Thanks bikeshop apprentice for cutting 3 chain links off when swapping my tyres over!?
