View Full Version : Wakefield Xtreme ride day and FXRRC- 18th & 20th July

I've never ridden Wakefield before.

I need to remedy that and acclimatise myself for the freaking cold before the St George rounds at the end of the month.
I'm looking to do both of these days. Is anybody else in for this and up for a garage share ?

Turbo

Could be up for the 18th... not done Wakefield before either.
How much is it? Whats the go with garages?

chubb
01-07-2014, 06:24 AM
You have to pay for a garage. It's $50 and the day is $179

I can't make the 18th as I can't get the day off. Might make the 20th just for some giggles

Also thinking about heading down on the 18th for a play, never been to wakefield.

Not looking forward to winter weather down there, thats why i left the UK to get away from cold weather.

My youngest boy wants to see the snow..... I should just bring him to the track day, yeah? It's a much cheaper way of seeing snow than driving all the way to the Snowies!

Although the Island will be fairly cold too, I reckon.

What's that adjusted for a windchill of 280kph? ;) Is it worth bringing studded ice tyres as well?

Too cold for me, I'm a fair weather rider.

Hoping to do both but will definitely do at least one of them.
Need the practice before St George as I've only done a few sessions there (and that was on the Kawasaki day which 90% of the bikes there had number plates on, couldn't get a clear run at it).

Question to all you pros out there!
any tips for us mere mortals on how to keep heat in the tyres when it's forecasting a high of 8c? Or is it something to not worry about

Marshy
12-07-2014, 04:41 PM
Yes, it's vitally important, and there's something you can do about it. Go seriously hard from the very first corner, and keep the speed up! If you go slow-ish for even a lap, your tyres will cool a lot, and the left side never really gets warm again. The right side will come back up, but the left won't. I've done a bunch of temp tests on a cold day down there, and after a slow lap, I couldn't get heat back in the left side (this is on the 600). Going hard from the start kept heat in it. Huge difference in temp.

SNOW!!! Far out. So, two questions:

1. Who the hell thought Goulburn was a good place for a racetrack?

2. Why would anyone ever schedule a race meeting there during the middle of winter?

Bonus question: Why do St George insist on scheduling the longest, most gruelling race on their calendar there every single year??

Answers on a postcard, please.

1. Who the hell thought Goulburn was a good place for a racetrack?

They just need to put underfloor heating on the bitumen.

2. Why would anyone ever schedule a race meeting there during the middle of winter?

Cuz they love the cold! Silly people.

Bonus question: Why do St George insist on scheduling the longest, most gruelling race on their calendar there every single year??

No postcard.

I note none of the committee actually ride during the event, although I concede that they do have to walk a short distance from their warm cars to the heated control tower in the morning, so could potentially be said to be suffering with us.

Mr.Ed
14-07-2014, 12:16 PM
Yeah... why they can't do the 4hour in December or January, when pretty much all racing is done/hasn't started for the year anyway and ppl actually have some days off to play with (not to mention escape the house during the holiday family frenzy), is beyond me.

It gets a bad wrap and a lot could be done to improve it, but I like it, you see everything from the pits(well almost) you get lots of laps at ride days and the Sydney slider's are much slower than me around it LOL ;-)

Hey James! Glad someone's got some nice weather (heat wave haha). It was -5 at WP at 7am eek! But it turned into a nice day.

Yeh I jumped ship but not by choice. My beloved Honda has been playing up and I been busting my ass to fix it chasing the problem. I ran out of time and my mate very kindly lent me his R6. Unfortunately it was set up for 190 ntecs and the geometry was all wrong, it was so hard to ride it's not even funny! Luckily Stu23 was in my garage and helper me all day to adjust it and led us to discover what the problem is. I'm gonna help my mate get it sorted.
I think I found the problem with my cbr last night so I will hopefully have it going for St George where I can attempt to redeem myself!!

Amazingly I managed to win 3rd outright in D grade 600 in the series. I did terrible on Sunday and didn't even enter round 1.

Carl-52
22-07-2014, 09:02 AM
HA thawed out now!!! Honestly the weather didnt bother me all day. First time at wakey was 3 months prior to this and i had managed a single 1:11.8 on that day, in my first practice/qualie we had decided to "play the game" and do some slow laptimes turns out i was straight back to the 1:12s!!!! and that was with quick throttle, qs, new dyno map and ecu stuff, suspension changes basically a new bike.

First race i won my row and was 1st 600 behind a few zx10r's (4th on the track), got the times and i had done a 1:08.5!!!!! so thats a 4 second PB already. :D
Second race, i got stuck behind a zx10 at the start and came in 2nd (6th on the track), did another 1:08...
Third race, got away clean got another 1st (5th on track) and dropped to a 1:07.8!!!!!!! WOOO
Last race, i needed to win it to win my row, got a great start came out in 4th after T2 and had a massive race long battle with the guy i had to beat (Jake Kell) all came down to the last corner where i was overtaking a slower rider and he was over taking me!! pulled it back tight, gave it a handful dirt track style, wheelied and slid it out of the corner and out dragged him to the line :D Got first place trophy and a faster 1:07.6 :D winning!!!!

Doing vids as i post this from front and rear cameras.

Carl-52

tyres looks perfect, just need to put some stiffer springs in the front so i can be more stable under braking and i know i can drop another second easy from improving into the T1/T2 , T8 and T10 (felt like i could brake alot later but the bike was too unstable to try)

Wakey has always made me wish for stiffer springs as well... especially under brakes on the bumps into T10. But then heavier ppl have done better times than I have on my own bike there, so I think the only logic explanation is that I need to eat more. hahaha

I see you're rocking the new set of wheels and it begs the questionSSS!!

How do you like them?! Did you get the chance to weigh them against the stockies? I suppose the Ape stockies are pretty light already though... but could you tell any difference?

Carl-52
22-07-2014, 04:44 PM
yeh we tried a few clicks of rebound on the rear and it settled it a little, its just funny because the forks were ok, now they are 1 click from full hard on comp and rebound and quite a few turns of preload. Need to stop growing and need stiffer springs!!!!! The height is now a solid 6'2" and pushing 80 kg. Rearsets are as low and as far back as possible and the bars are almost flat bars so i have space...

They are great. And bad. They look nice, but attract dust to the surface like they are some form of dust-magnet! 5 minutes after cleaning, they are dusty again. They are light, but not as light as the Factory wheels. And they take a different rear sprocket and carrier, so I need to have two sprockets the same for switching between oem wheels and these ones. Captive spacers (like the Aprilia oem) are nice. And when clean, they look great! Even if I wouldn't have personally chosen the colour.

The Ape comes with two different wheel types - the R model (mine are all R models) comes with cast aluminium wheels, and the Factory comes with lighter forged aluminium. I bought a set of used Factory wheels from the US recently, so weighed them all recently (except the rear Carrozerria. Oops).

Wheel weights (without discs):

- - - - - - Stock R - - - Carrozerria - - - Factory

Front: - - - - 4.0kg - - - - 3.5kg - - - - - - 3.2kg

Rear: - - - - -6.4kg - - - - ??? - - - - - - - 4.9kg

I didn't weigh the rear Carrozerria, but it's very light. I'd say close to the Factory weight (closer than the front is).

Mr.Ed
22-07-2014, 08:08 PM
Cheers, that's some cool info in that post! ;)

I figured that wouldn't be much in it but didn't expect them to be heavier than the Factory ones seeing as they're both forged Aluminum (oh boy, I don't say Aluminium!!).

I didn't think the color was that great either but it suits that paint scheme really well IMHO. Like, REAAAALLY well!

Mstevo

Kris
23-07-2014, 01:09 PM
Not much difference..

3. Aprilia RSV Mille RR-1000R NERA OZ-Magnesium front: 3,10 Kg
4. Aprilia RSV Mille RR-1000R NERA OZ-Magnesium rear: 4,30 Kg

Kimbo
23-07-2014, 01:11 PM

3. Aprilia RSV Mille RR-1000R NERA OZ-Magnesium front: 3,10 Kg
4. Aprilia RSV Mille RR-1000R NERA OZ-Magnesium rear: 4,30 Kg

Hmmm... that really isn't much. Especially the front.

I wouldn't get CF though. It would drive me mental thinking if they're still safe to ride... I know chances are 99.9% that they would be but my OCD would play up I'm sure.

The ape Factory forged aluminium are known for being the lightest OEM wheels of just about any volume-produced road bike. And equal to some other brand's mags.
