View Full Version : Question about Painting Leathers

Carl-52
17-02-2014, 09:30 PM
Hey guys,

Anyone ever painted their leathers?? Im think of throwing some colour on my ultra used white leathers, boots and gloves...

Anyone have any tips, tricks, products etc to use??

Ive found the cheap american leather paint that gets great reviews online but i want to know if its really as easy as they say... just roll/brush it on etc etc

Cheers,

Carl-52

Use waproo.

You can get em at any key king mister mint type shop.

I did the red on my Dainese boots to match.

this is the only Australian supplier i could find for the Angelus leather paints (the ones everyone rave about online) They have heaps of colours and Neon colours (American equivalent of fluro). Plus they are rediculously cheap

I've seen mick leathers post a few pictures on color repair.
I'd be asking will the dye effect the strength of the cotton used the hold it all together...If you want a gayish coloured suit just get one made...Collins leathers design custom fit $1100.0 shipped in any colours.

Do a search for VGA auto paints on YouTube. They have an awesome spray on product for changing the colour of leather and a tutorial on the tube

ok guys!!! Uni work is finally finished!!!! WOOOOOOOO, Anyways, boots and gloves and been carlbotaged in the appropriate Fluro colour... They have pretty much any colour you can think of including turquiose!! lol < sisters fav colour....... Paint can be mixed too to create some funky colours. Anyway its cheap as chips and takes no time at all to do, couple of coats with a brush or roller and its done. I bought the paint from the link i posted previously... Tasmanian dude had it at my house 2 days after i ordered it :D  Heres his facebook page so you can see some of the stuff he does. https://www.facebook.com/chasezdesignz

haha im doing some photoshop images for my suit right now :D and the fairing Marshy gave me... the paint is really flexible, ive scrunched up my gloves into a ball and didnt see any sign of wear at all. so far so good. tried fluro yellow over black without any prep or stripping, took a while but it looks ok now... I will try strip the black off and repaint it light coloured on a test piece soon.

Well, I'll have to dig this up again... I wanna give my leathers a bit of a spruce up but since they're mostly black I'm wondering how well the paint will work. Anyone painted any black surfaces?

Also, I'm guessing one of those 29.5ml bottles one do much, hey?! I'm thinking at least one bottle to do the boots and one to do some accents on the leathers... correct? Any prep work required??

Carl-52
04-05-2014, 06:00 PM
29.5ml bottles do heaps!!! I bought two and I still have 1 leftover after doing the underarms on my leathers, hump on the back, gloves and half of my boots. Painting on black is a pain, but you can paint over in white first then your colour and it comes up quite well. Prep work is a good rub down with isopropyl alcohol or leather stripper, with maybe a light sand if they are a bit rough. The finish comes down to how much time you take.

Mr.Ed
04-05-2014, 07:34 PM
Noice... will get a bottle of white too then. I'm not gonna go crazy on the suit but there are some bits that need painting regardless... hopefully I'll have enough to do the boots too!

I did my blue Sidi boots in white. Two coates and it came up a treat.

Carl-52
12-05-2014, 06:05 PM
well i have definitely tested out this paint and how wear resistant it is at dirt tracking on the weekend... No chips, no blisters, not missing bits of paint!!!!! (it got a right blasting too with the roost off the 450's and 500's out there). Also MEGA cudos to Waproo sprayon Gloss coats (its a high gloss leather sealant), the dirt just wiped straight off!!! :D Now im thinking i might do my leathers like Tony Elias' leathers in WSBK, adding some red and some more black to the white and fluro leathers i have at the moment.

Yes, if you want it to take/last.
Ideally it wants cleaning with a leather cleaner then prepped with amyl to make it a bit porous before drying thoroughly.
Then lots of light coats of pigment/paint, dried with a heat gun/hairdryer to speed things up in between.
