Just a friendly reminder that early bird entries close on Friday this coming week, the 10th. Jan appreciates it if people can get their entries in early, rather than all at the last minute (or actually late, which is a sin only partly redeemable by buying her kilos worth of Belgian chocolates).

So enter now, peeps!! :peace:

On the list of things to do tomorrow.

Stu23
05-01-2014, 09:44 PM
still waiting for my engine to be fixed after it destroyed itself at the last st George, also took the opportunity to have the shock and forks refreshed by zeno so all I have is a frame at the moment :) Carls is running fine, not sure I want to run it ( I crashed it last time out don't want to do it again lol ) that would be bad

But if you want Nick, ill give the nice new R6 a run down at the st George and give you a report hahahahahah ;) couldn't resist you did offer

Marshy
05-01-2014, 10:30 PM
I'll rent you the championship-winning bike if you want. It's just sitting there.

Stu23
05-01-2014, 10:40 PM
Now that isn't a bad offer at all Nick, however after racing a bike I didn't own, and nearly destroying it at Oran Park, I vowed never to race someones bike again unless it was without risk, it cost me a fair bit of money to fix and almost a friendship..... Id rather not go there again.. If I need to I will most likely race the kids bike, just for fun until I get mine sorted. Thanks for the offer though, as always it is appreciated

I'll be there not racing, but pit crew for Nelso.

Unfortunately we've already run out of money before the race season has started, so I won't be doing the St George Series only Nelso will be. That is of course unless someone can throw me some sponsorship for Entry and Tyres.

Will you do Pcra the following weekend?

Yes, I'll be doing the PCRA rounds. RT Screen Printing and Kaneg are helping me out with the 125 this year and also Tom Harrison from Harrison Automotive is doing all the mechanical/set up work for me.

They lost my emailed / scanned entry to St George in Nov. It dippaseared into the ether, [well I suspect their junk mail]. :smash: So I then dropped it off in person at the meeting! :washing:

This time I figured snail mail was the surer option as opposed to having innane phone conversations :phone: ... we don't have your entry ... did you check junk mail? ... what's that? ... oh god - why does it have to be this hard ... :) . I probably should have gone with registered. :pray2:

Thanks Stuart. The tank cover 'was' the only spare part I didn't have.
Julie has been gracious enough to push a new one through. Hope to pick it up on Saturday.
I will bring the rest of the damaged fairing pieces with me, but I am not holding my breath. Gravel traps are a nasty experience.
When I crashed at Broadford, the upper and belly pan were repaired. These parts will have to do for round 1.
I appreciate your offer of fibreglass 101. Racing deity prayers for you also. Hope it comes together in time!

Michael, Mick Hone shit me. Unless you want the whole rearset, they're hopeless.
Three times I tried to order spare footpegs. Still have too many RHS ones.
Quickshift gear rod, forget it. Maybe something off a Suzuki will fit. Leave it out.
I email Woodcraft, I get an invoice. It gets posted and the order is spot on.
Thats service. Woodcraft have been very helpful to me.

Definitely SC0 for the hotter weather. Nick have you tried the new compound 0? Much better durability than the previous.

Shippy, as far as I know if they are the proper full zippered 2 piece not just the small attaching zipper at the back then ok. If they are the latter, I wouldn't race in them anyway.

Not yet, and I'm actually quite keen to try them. I'm planning on doing ASBK in April, and they are now a Pirelli control tyre.....

Absolutely correct. 2 piece are fine, so long as they zip securely all the way around.

Cool. The last thing you want is your pants around your knees if you have a tumble. Happened to a previous missus of mine at t5. A lot of riders stopped to help her including travel marhsals. Going against what they were told at the mornings briefing ;)

It's a good idea to lockwire them or otherwise run some sort of lanyard. It's actually required now under the GCRs(?) or somewhere, but I'm not sure that St George enforce it yet. But having had a couple of cameras snap their mounts, I can vouch for the value of lanyards!!

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z57/tweaker__/20140128_162938_zps7375fb93.jpg

Ok, now where exactly do you plan to sticking your head when you get to the straights? When I had that same bike my helmet would sit pretty much where your camera is! Same thing on the ZX6R... and I mount my camera on top of the triple (the mount is pretty much where the turning fork logo is on your triple) and it works a treat! Get to see everything ahead (provided you a clear screen) and even the tacho which I find quite helpful when reviewing my footage.

Stu23 has his Gopro mounted there as well, its a protected little place for it... He doesn't really get down on the tank though so it doesn't bother him.
If i mounted one there on mine it would be taking video of my brains or my nose or something... A visor POV shot!!! all i need is a HUD display :jaw: :thumb:

It's a good idea to lockwire them or otherwise run some sort of lanyard. It's actually required now under the GCRs(?) or somewhere, but I'm not sure that St George enforce it yet. But having had a couple of cameras snap their mounts, I can vouch for the value of lanyards!!

Yep! I always make a 'leash' for my with zipties!

case and point... check where my camera is pointing at on this pic! It banged like crazy for 3 laps there but the leash did it's thing though.

Wetty has some generic ones in stock.

I use and strongly recommend the Woodcraft ones. Rock-solid, unlike the carbon fibre ones, which simply bend out of the way, which kinda defeats the purpose. I've gone right off anything cf except cosmetic items. It's not the ideal material for protection, with the possible exception of tank sliders (and only then because it's impractical to fit any other material there).

Looks great! Hey, they're nice fairings ;)

What I do with mine is dremel out a big 'triangle' in the front of the bellypan (I will take a pic soon) so that there's more airflow into the fairing/exhaust/engine to help keep things cool. It makes a noticeable difference on an R6 particularly.

Its not just the radiator that needs some airflow :) if you can get some air to the sump, headers etc oil will be cooler and the rising heat from the exhaust will be a bit less. Every little bit helps

I'm getting use to this crash / fix cycle ... chance to improve bike a little more? Marshy's bionic bits were fantastic ... that QS is da bomb, hope I didn't break it!

Gave it some more thought and reckon T4b is only one of two short RH corners (other being old T10 new T17) on the North Circuit. Maybe the bike / rider / tyre combo couldn't keep the RHS of the tyre hot enuf?

Tyre is smooth as, like a new tyre on the RHS. Tyre was UK NTec rear, had already done 2 practice, 2 qualli and almost 2 races ... still was not scrubbed in enuf? I don't chew tyres typically ... combination of old bike and slow rider! :)

Far Kurnell Rick. No good all this. Did you get the ankle checked? How are you feeling today?
On the plus you weren't bringing up the rear like you joked about. Plenty of bikes passed after you went down. I'm full of infection (been too crook to get off the lounge for a week) which may cloud my perception but it seemed to just let go suddenly without warning.
Cool video angle and it does work well with the visor. ugggh head spinning I'm back to lounge.

I only have the video to form an opinion so I'm gonna speculate like no one should ever do whilst I wait for the UFC to start... hahahaha

It seems to me, you stayed too long on the first leg of the 'mini flip flop' that is T4/T5 and then leaned the bike too far trying to make the apex of T5, which you missed by a bit... at that stage you open the throttle but the bike always get a bit flighty there because the track falls away a little. And when you add throttle + lean angle + not enough weight on the back wheel you get the scenario above.

I had a few moments like that when I was riding the North Circuit as well... luckily the bike straightened itself without spitting me up too much. Still enough to bruise my ankles. hahahaha

IMHO, and I'm sure others more experienced (and faster) riders will disagree and even do what I should have done here and not judge without actually being there but... I reckon you could have tossed the bike faster from side to side (i.e. faster counter steering) there and it would have been fine as you would have picked the bike up a bit to avoid hitting the inside curb on T5. I worked on that with Bruce once and by the end of the day my arm was tired from how hard I was pushing the RHS bar!!

02-02-2014, 12:55 PM

That was a fun weekend kind of.... Strange, frustrating but fun nonetheless :) Sat the bike was awful and would not steer at all, turns out I had forgotten to set any sag since reubuilding a few days ago...... just forgot in my haste.. oops Then got to EC early on Sunday and set some sag into it. Bike was better, rider was not confident ! Although kept tweaking it during the day and trying things out, doing the 600's and the clubsport gave me more opportunities to try things but was getting tired towards the end of the day.. Had some great racing, was overtaken twice under waved yellows and wasnt happy to see that, and had somone run into me at turn 2 on Saturday which was interesting ! but if I was running a bit faster as i should be then it wouldnt have happend. So more work on suspension required and time to put the bike on a dyno as i didnt get that done either :)

Any one else out there understand how the handicap worked for round 1 & 2 .

As i understood how it should work

The person with the slowest lap time in qualifying , race 1 or race 2 is the benchmark

then everybody uses there fastest lap time for either of qualifying , race 1 or race 2 .

take your fastest lap time away from the persons slowest and you have your handicap which is multiplied by 5 (5 lap race) then added onto your race 2 time for the full race. and that is your handicapped time .

if this is correct ?

Not quite, Rob. Because they moved the handicap race to be Race 2 (instead of Race 3 in previous years), it is now your fastest lap from qualifying or race 1 to determine your 'fastest lap' time (and the slowest lap for everyone too) for the calcs. The only thing that counts from Race 2 is the elapsed race time.

That said, I haven't checked this one. I will have a look.

Jeez, what I dogs breakfast!! I didn't score any championship points, according to the results. The handicap results aren't right either.

Thanks Nick . it makes more sense to do the race time on race 2 than 3 to give them a chance to work out the results .

Not that im going to be much different in the handicap but some of the times used for the bench mark don't seem right to me .

take Sun 1st Race in 600cc
Jamie did a 2:00.1 on his 1st and only lap , where the benchmark i take it was used , where i did a 2:02.8 (excursion on t2 1st lap) and there was also 2:05.9 in the same race. Did they take Jamies time and not the others because we had selected to have the handicap in clubsport .

They also used Jamies slow handicap time as his fastest lap . in Race 1 2:00.1 - 2:00.1 =0 x5 =0 + race 2 time 9:20.2 = 9:20.2

or steven in clubsport

does a 2:22.5 in race 1 , only does 1 lap so this is the benchmark but it is also classed as his fastest lap

So they must be using the 1st race as the fastest lap .

if this is how they are going to work out the handicap then just do a very slow 1st lap (like a 2:40) then come in the pits on your 2nd lap . next race you have to start from the back of the grid but your pretty much got the 25 points in the bag and a plastic trophy unless someone goes slower than you or you have a shocker for your race 2 time.

would it be because you didnt choose the class for series point score and it defaults to the 1st race (600 class) not clubsport ?

Yes, it is that, but I didn't even notice the bit on the form that asked. I will have to contact them.

No, errors abound. It should be your fastest lap from quali or race 1. It used to be race 2 as well, which normally evened out any weird anomalies, like not doing quali and then only completing one lap in race1. But because they are trying not to have another situation like in Nov where the final race of the day didn't get completed, so the handicap result wasn't completed either. But they haven't thought it through.

Also, I've stopped calculating the handicap for them, since Chris Baker gave me such a serve at the end-of-year presentation. And now it's full of errors. Why not just draw the results out of a hat?

I long ago (last year) stopped worrying about the handicap and just go out there and have fun.

Was puzzled after looking at the handicap data. It's all over the place. Some of the fastest laps from R1 and R2 conflict with natsoft data.

Apparently it is supposed to help out the slower dudes (like me)??

I agree with the idea of just drawing race results from a hat. More accurate that way, clearly.

I just emailed Peter Snow (the handicap dude and chief points scorer) about the handicap results being a bit how's-yer-father, and he replied saying that he'd gotten lots of similar feedback and was working through them one at a time. So stay tuned for updated championship points in due course.

I gotta say after reading all that I still have absolutely no idea how the handicap works. So I think I'll just stick with my current strategy of going as fast as I can on every lap. If I end up with a trophy then it's a nice bonus :)

Hi Matthew,

Sorry for the delay in replying to you. I have been busy with other race meetings.

1. Round 1 points for the overall series is only on two legs not three. The events held on the south circuit only got through two rounds while the north circuit did three. However, to keep the series equal to all competitors only two rounds could be carried into the Overall Series.

2. Amended results have recently been put up on the website.

Zero handy cap points for me in my first ever race while some of the top riders in the country receive bonus points....seems fair and logical. It sucks the competition out and inserts a random lottery element into it.

Racing in the Victorian club is fun, despite having never seen any of these tracks prior to race weekend yet. Cheaper entry fees, more race weekends in the year & no handy cap raffle. I definitely recommend heading down to battle with the Mexicans.

+1. It's archaic and stupid. I tried hard to get rid of it for this year, but was overruled by the club committee, none of whom race.

Picked up a brochure at Mac Park a couple weeks ago, there were 15 weekends (from memory) of racing south of the border this year printed on it.

Yeh I don't understand it, I did pretty badly that weekend and it seemed as though I got a further kick in the guts by the handicap from system from what I could make out

So if nobody deliberately rode the handicap race and it was actually the fastest time of the slowest rider, that rider would stay around the back of the field away from position points and the handicap points would be relevant to all the 20 riders in front of him/her being fair for all.

Thus shrinking the field points tally fairly and evenly

Instead people are racing the handicap race doing their best to get the 25 handicap points and then climbing their way up grid, scoring decent position points in the later racers and trying to claim trophies at the end of the day

Thus making it all confusing, screwing over everybody in the field and making everything a dogs breakfast

They have more tracks, and therefore more available dates for race weekends. And because of that, tracks are cheaper to hire and so clubs can run events with less competitors and not make a big loss.

Giddy up Luddenham Raceway! And some of the other proposed ones in NSW.

If you're in it for the championship, you'd be nuts not to try and maximise your points haul. And with an additional 25 points on offer, not trying to win the handicap too would be like going out in a race and riding at 6 tenths, dawdling around and not caring where you finish. That's not why you go racing, right?
