It will be making as much as the new model RSV4 does as standard.

I suspect Kris is talking RWHP, and the published specs on the new bike is at the crank. But manufacturer claims are often wildly different from reality, so it will be very interesting to see what the new one makes at the wheel. :thumb:

What's changed with the electronics?

Yep, RWHP and an APX2 bike with even a standard engine leaves behind a new RF with Marelli electronics in its dust.

Just ask Liam Wilkinson who at Mallala chose to run his APX2 bike (12 model) ahead of his blueprinted new 15 model with the new engine (but magnetti electronics)

APX2 vs Magnetti bike is WORLDS apart, even with horsepower differences.

New motor was dynoed in Sweden by a mate vs some other bikes

SST RSV4 Engine - old motor with kit cams/pistons etc - 188bhp
New RSV4 engine - 193bhp
2012 ZX10 - 191bhp
1199R - 198bhp

Interesting!! His new bike was supposed to come with APX2. What happened?

So, what's the big difference between the two electronics packages?

As usual, he was stuffed around by JSG. I believe he has it now, or is close to it.

Everything - everything single thing is different. The two biggest differences I felt immediately - wheelie control and engine braking. The gearbox even shifts nicer. APX2 comes with the software the WSBK and Superstock bikes use and you can adjust every little thing, even the amount of force you place on the shifter in terms of kilograms in order for the lever to shift gear (ie do you use alot of force or a gentle tap). Just out of the box with the Aprilia supplied map its better - like WAY better

Race ECU is just not as good. I know that now after spending 3 months on the APX and being forced back to the Race ECU whilst my bike is being built.

The bikes being raced in World Superstock have the 'Black' APX2 - which lack telemetry, gps function etc but the mapping is the same

Kris

Kim, order a superstock bike from italy. You wont regret it - forget the road bike

+1

If I were buying the 2015 bike, this is exactly what I would do. You essentially get the APX2 for free (the SSTK racebike with APX2 and all the other racing niceties such as no key, no road gear, and all configured for racing) is the same price as a road-going RR/RF here, with none of the good bits on it. The MM-equipped bike is a lot cheaper than the road bike here, but Kris says the APX is worth the extra coin.

Woe, some of these new bikes and mods make my head spin! I'm blown away by how far things have come in the last 5 years; these machines look absolutely awesome!

Seeing pictures of this year's new bikes has prompted a hypothetical question. How much faster are these new weapons, over (what we thought were) the weapons from 10 years ago? After racing a 20 year old and an 11 year old bike over the past couple of years, I can tell you the difference in times between my two race bikes (one is only 102hp, while the other is 155hp) is about 5 seconds per lap on the GP track at SMSP. I am amazed by the technological advances that have continually been made, but especially the last 5-6 years, and wonder what a newer bike with better geometry, 40 more hp and all the traction control/quickshifter gizmos etc, would be worth in times, over bikes from just 10 years ago? I see guys jump on newer bikes and substantially drop their times, but how much of that is the bike and how much is it the rider improving or gaining confidence? What do you guys on newer machines think would be a realistic figure that the newer bikes have gained over the bikes from, say, 10 years ago?

Kimbo

I do like shiney new things , ha. I want the launch and wheelie control as I am a shit starter , because I usually end up last into the first corner as I am to mechanically sympathetic, and the front to mid pack get away while you are passing the slower bikes, and I want full gyro traction control so I dont get highsided again with the rudimentary TC that the BAZZAZ gives. ouch. Hey Nelso, Carbon wheels give you around 1.5 secs a lap advantage with no other changes

Yes I heard someone's radiator cap didn't get refitted correctly after scrutineering, apparently you could hear it hissing back in the pits, just something else to pay attention to when getting ready to race :-/

your Xray looks nasty I hope your up and about ASAP

Thinking of penning a letter to st george re scrutineering, just a note maybe the scrutes can ensure the rad cap is replaced properly after they have checked the water.. Was a D grade rider who lost his rad cap.. ( perhaps stressed and forgot in his haste to put his bike back together ) this kind of thing shouldnt happen, just a tweak of the system is all thats required to make sure it never happens again

I think there may be a few letters being penned re Broady - like not black flagging Windy and leaving him on track with smoke pouring from his bike for almost three laps which eventually led to his high side... Very very poor

It does suck especially something so preventable. If they want to inspect lock wiring then it contradicts that buy inspecting only water is in radiator and not checking that the radiator cap I properly lock wired. Anyways that's my winge.
Ps loved the track. Got some decent laps down on the Friday it's just a shame I couldn't put them into action on race days.

Yep, and i can say that it was a shit load/full radiator capacity fluid loss at t3. I went through it first and was close to preceeding Breesey on the side of the track. Slippiest "water" i have ever hit. Lee and i were both gesturing to the marshals to stop the session.

exactly stu, the reason why they mandate lockwiring all your components is to ensure that it's all torqued up and locked in place. Having to rip your bike apart in a rush at the track increases the risk of something like this happening. Were they still actually testing the fluid? If the slippery fluid passed their test then the whole thing's a waste of time anyway:der:

Arrow exhaust. DID ERV3 520 chain and sprockets, everything new, only done 1 race weekend (St George in Feb). This is the Clubsport Unlimited bike I built to have a crack at this year's championship, but injury (on the other bike, not this one!) has ruled that out. 5k road kms, only a couple of hundred track kms. Rear V02 tyre is 5 laps old, front Dunlop also quite new. Lithium battery. Magnetic hex lockwirable sump plug. Vesrah SRJL brake pads. Smog blockoff plates. Lap timer bracket. R&G carbon tank sliders. All lockwired. Carbon fibre frame covers should be here any day now. This was going to be my No.1 bike, so spared no expense. $13,900.

'09 Factory. Just finished fitting it with complete 2013 Aprilia Factory electronics: APRC (traction, launch and wheelie control). Annitori QS PRO quickshifter. '13 Factory ECU, '13 Factory wheels. Serviced suspension and re-sprung front and rear for my weight (90 kegs), dialled in suspension and geometry (swingarm pivot, steering head angle etc). Woodcraft clipons. GB covers. SS rearsets. Arrow exhaust. DID ERV3 520 chain and sprockets, everything new, only done 1 race weekend (St George in Feb). The advantage of having a shed full of the same model bikes, plus building them up from a bare frame or a bare motor, is that you end up with a lot of spares. So it hasn't cost me an absolute fortune (although it's not cheep cheep either) because I've either already had or sourced cheaply many of the more expensive components. That said, there's still a fair list of bits I've bought new (or if I'm totally honest, some I have 'borrowed' off one of the other bikes until the new parts arrive). Anecdotally, it usually costs ~$1k to $1.5k to retrofit, but it depends also on whether your 09/10 dash is the old or the new version. Mine was the new version (meaning I didn't need to buy a dash too), but Breesey's was the old version. If it's got a sidestand light, it's the old one....

I've lost count.... there are 4 in the workshop right now, but 2 of those have just been sold. I've built 3 or 4 others that have previously been sold. That's in the past 18 months. But mostly they are build projects, not my toys. ;)

Are any of you RSV4 ppl able to help by taking some photos of their bikes (without fairings) if its not too much trouble or if you have those photos on file.

I just mounted a new radiator and need to make sure i routed all the cables correctly as and if the clearance from the throttle demand unit and radiator is correct.

Ive attached some photos of the angles i'm after. Thanks guys

Looks fine. Just make sure that your throttle moves smoothly. The oem cables are very suspectable to getting twisted/tangled and as a result the throttle sticks. I moved my RBW motor up to the top of the bike

All perfect, except that you see the metal ring around the throttle cables down at the demand sensor? That should be screwed in to the top radiator mount.

Farrrrkkkk thats such an effort :(

I was wondering where those metal rings went. Theres one on the other side too that holds the overflow tubes.

The demand sensor metal tubes (that the cables go on) seem pretty close to the radiator. Is that normal?

Kris- thanks i was pretty careful with the throttle cables but there are some others under there that i was too sure of (thermo fans and what not)

Also for some reason i unscrewed the earthing bolt (no idea why i did that when taking the rad???) and think ive put those back correctly. There are 3 wires going to the main earth bolt and and aother smaller one sitting on the frame. Sound right?

The overflow tubes ring is attached by the bolt that holds the reservoir bottle to the rad, IIRC.

The earth attachments are right. The 3 main earths bolt to the motor, and the little piggyback earth goes to the frame.

The cables near the radiator are fine - it's never that hot. Just be careful to keep the reg/rec wires away from the exhaust headers. The headers are quite close to the wiring if you're not careful, and I can tell you from experience that the headers will melt through the wiring in about 10 seconds from dead cold..... ;)

They are an awesome bike - you'll love it (I'm sure you already do!). Happy to share the knowledge.... just let me know what you're working on and I can assist.

Hey Nick,

I know this a very track oriented forum, but I have a very non track oriented question about my RSV4, so non-track oriented, it's about passenger footpegs.

To be clearer, I am after this bit:

https://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=56849

but, by friday... Need to take a girlie for a ride on friday and at the moment, I cannot mount the akra exhaust to the pillion footpegs as it's mounted to the carbon hanger instead! I've got the pillion pegs, just not that part :(

Do you happen to have it from any of your builds lying around?

Thanks mate,

Nath

seriously though, towing the equivalent of an enclosed car float or potentially a horsefloat.. this addition has a solid 3500kg towing capacity, which a lot of new vehicles are also currently rated for, but this comes with the extra cab and tray space to do the business till the enclosed trailer gets built...

If you give it a light flush (more like just drain the coolant and refill it with distilled water), you'll make people happy in the event of a spillage whilst still protecting the engine from rust etc. A touch of coolant still in the system is ok for anything but racing. Just remember to properly flush it before your first race meet.

Remember people, never ever let tap water anywhere near your coolant system and you'll never have any problems with rust. Once you've put tap water in it, it's a lot of flushing to ensure it's all out again. Distilled/demineralised water is cheep cheep from Bunnings in 3 litre containers. Before racing, buy a few containers and flush for a while with the motor running (pour demineralised water in the radiator, while the drain hole on the water pump is open, and the engine is running). The bike only holds a couple of litres (less than you might think), so it's not expensive to do.

one tooth gone from the front, and half the teeth on the rear are now half the thickness they should be!! (with the other half bent off at a funny angle) im just thankful that it only sheared off the mount and that it didnt take the crankcase with it. It usually ends up looking like this when the cover mount gets snapped off 1350

even looking at the oil filter on there, the chain has put a hole in it along with the giant gouge. But no oil left the system, at all. My swingarm is all marked up now though... Battle scars!

Finally got theFarings on, couldebt start the bike. Released had the tip switch on upside down.... Even though there's a Massive arrow pointing up.[emoji35], did a few laps of my test area, http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/22/0a9a20e7e99d75613c415ec825542c7c.jpg1st time riding a bike since my crash. I loved it, not sure my neighbours did so much. Had to adjust the Cilpons a touch. Which got me thinking where do people test ride there track bikes? In the street and run the risk? At work (luckily I can) or do you just wing it until you get to the track?

This. Thought about a lot of other options, but have always decided it wasn't worth the risk. If you build them right, they normally work fine when you get to the track. I'd absolutely love to have a test track tho, especially for suspension tuning!

I trailer the bike to a quiet country road and give it a run out in the first 3-4 gears. Let it get nice and hot so I can check for oil leaks and the like.

But I live in Canberra so it's like a 15min trailer ride to a quiet stretch of road......

The only prob I've seen with the pit bull is changing your sprockets aka moving your back wheel can change how snug/loose your bike will lock in... No such prob with T-Rex.

The Pitbull Trailer Restraint is a great restraint system. You don't need a *trailer-mate* (front wheel chock) to accompany the Pitbull restraint system, as Windy says, they can be a real bitch to restrain when you've changed sprocket gearing.
If you do go for the Pitbull system, I'd only use an ocky strap around front wheel, or rope, to stop front wheel from pivoting from left to right.

Turbo
19-08-2015, 10:43 AM
Is it much of a pain to fit the bike/axel part of it before rolling on to trailer?
I imagine you'd need a side stand to make it easier?

I allow my wheel to pivot, its better for the steering/triple clamps. The design of the system is so it allows the bike to naturally do what its designed to do, up/down on its suspension and allow the front wheel to move.

no ... just use your race rear stand to sturdy the bike, then fit the pitbull restaint to the rear axle ... then use the ocky strap that comes with it, an hook it to the heel guard of the rearsets, or something similar, to hold it up an away from the wheel, then remove ur race stand an roll it in trailer ... simple :D

Assuming Mr Nick can help me out on the fairing department tonight, next Sunday for the 15 model, run in and get a feel for the bike/gearing as im told the thing is radically different.

The new SBK engine was being timed yesterday when I dropped into the shop - I'm waiting on some secret Ohlins parts from the race department to get Mr Al to sort the shock out. Then its ready, I think.

Absolutely both bikes will be run in the EC final round. Perhaps even Winton.
