If you need the form you can download it here http://www.scribd.com/doc/165879718/Indemnity-form-for-ARDC-private-practice-days-at-Sydney-Motorsport-Park-Bikes

I'm interested, what time do you have to get there?

Marshy
07-09-2013, 02:13 PM
Once there's a confirmed bike session (which I'm sure there will be), you can just turn up whenever. There's not the mad scramble for a parking spot and garage as a regular track day. I usually aim for 7:30, but there's not a big disadvantage in getting there at 8:30 or later. Bikes are often first or second out though.

I still have to get a smaller sprocket as I'm running out of puff. It is true that the racers tell me the faster you go, you will find that you will need a smaller sprocket so you don't run out of puff.

And my tyre warmers are about to die too

Still need to install new forks and shock and set geometry for the new 180/60 rear

For SMP 15/46

Hits the rev limiter on the main straight for like a second and a bit before I back off for turn 1

Marshy
10-09-2013, 07:16 AM
I was running the same for ages, then as my exit speed out of 12 improved, I moved to 15/45. After a while I ran out of revs with that combo too, so went to a 15/44, but I didn't like it as much. I've just recently switched back to the 45, and now I find I'm not running out of revs, so clearly I've gotten slower out of 12 and/or into 1.....

Mate I felt so bad for you in the last session, on my out lap I sware I could see oil on most of the track, I had the back step out coming out of 12, but all day id been seeing suspicious marks on the track. I was going to go into the pits and tell them, I stayed out for that lap (only had like 2-3 secs to make that decision), as I came around to (old) T9 I saw the yellow flag and started swaring in my helmet and sure enough there was a bike in the kitty litter :( I raced down the pit lane and told old mate about the oil.

In session 2 T5 looked like it was hosed in oil but the traction seemed to be there, took me about 6 laps to get the courage to hit it hard though.

As you said after your first off you won't feel the need to be precious with your fairings so you can twice as not precious now!

I had a pretty rotten time trying to get the vibe of the superbike pro I just put on my rear. Don't like it as much as the ntec I had on before. Spent a few sessions trying to work out the right pressure for my riding and wasn't too far off but decided to call it a day after the oil came out. Got a starting point for next time though so that's a positive.

chubb
14-09-2013, 08:47 AM
Superbike pro are a very hard compound

I use to have them and set them at 28 hot

Then tend to spin up really easily

I don't rate them. The fronts on the other hand aren't too bad

dan
14-09-2013, 09:36 AM
They were spinning way too much for my ability / comfort. I went out originally at 29 in the first session and thought I might have just been a little aggressive on the throttle before picking the bike up then it happened again in the second. Looked up the specs on the Pirelli site and they said a good starting point was 26 so I tried that and was still having trouble. They recommended dropping to 24-25 if it was still spinning too much so tried that but then came in after the oil.

I have some NTECs on rims so I thnk I'll just put them on. I was literally 3 seconds off my regular times :(

dan
14-09-2013, 09:39 AM
The NTECs I had on before was my first experience with slicks and I found the slide the predictable and manageable. Never felt like it was getting away from me. Every time these started to slide I felt like the rear was going to go and at one point around turn 9 I almost high-sided. Came proper up out of my seat. Shame I hadnt double checked to make sure it was recording as I had my camera mounted on the tail!

dan
14-09-2013, 09:44 AM
Everything that Marshy wrote in about these tyres in that tyre thread makes sense to me now. I guess this is what it is all about though, finding out what works and I can cross those SB Pros off my list.

Unfortunately I can't just do a sprocket change on the BMW like the suzukis and claim 300kph on the straight. The BMW speedo works off the wheel speed sensors and the GPS doesn't lie either.

I'm not a wheelie god but I've found the rule of thumb to be power ups when your on the cam and clutch ups when your off it. That one in my vid out of T5 is nothing more than just pinning the throttle from about 70% and leaning back in 3rd (600cc). Power ups are better suited for the track because you just do it under acceleration and you don't lose much pace at all (only really the extra drag). But if i was coming out of the pits on the south circuit I'd give the clutch a fan in 2nd.

I got screamed at at ECRD one day I was passing a guy just out of 12, I did the same thing but I clicked it into 4th and kept sailing down the straight on the back wheel. I got the half rolled up red flag and old mate was waiting for me at the entry of pitlane.

It's a 07 tuned with 112rwhp. I've geared it for acceleration (15/45) to haul my 100kg ass around. It suffers on the straight a bit, im going to try going a 44 on the back and see how it compares. I'm only getting 225 by the GPS on the straight :(

I geared a bit longer on my bike to overcome the lack of terminal velocity, and it made a big difference. Give a 44 a go. As you get quicker out of T12, you need taller gearing.

I'm getting 250 on the GPS at the end of the straight. 113 rwhp, and I'm only a few kgs lighter than you. I reckon it was running out of puff, as peak power is a fair bit lower than redline.

Mine shows just under 260 on the dial (15/45) and my GPS is around 225 on the straight as well. I'm running out of puff when I get to my markers. Interested to hear how your 44 goes.

Just looked my configuration up on gearingcommander.com and it reckons my top should be around 229 so that's probably not far off. 235kmh if I went 44 at the back.

Thanks nick, I will definitely buy a 44t before my next outing. I was checking gearing commander vs my logged GPS max speeds. On the dyno my bike drops off at 14,500 and limiter is at 15,000. On the straight 225 is the exact speed gearing commander says for 14,500. I'm maxing out my top speed in 3rd between T3-T4 and T4-T5, but I can actually hit 15k down the hill from T3 (since its down hill). Going to a 44 will give me about 5kph more in each gear so I shouldn't have to spin it past 14,500 anywhere.

Having data is so useful! I've picked up so much from being able to video and time properly.

It's a 07 tuned with 112rwhp. I've geared it for acceleration (15/45) to haul my 100kg ass around. It suffers on the straight a bit, im going to try going a 44 on the back and see how it compares. I'm only getting 225 by the GPS on the straight :(

Marty , What size rear are you running . i found 15 font ,43 rear and running a 190 set the gearing nice , revs just toping out down the straight and the top speed averaging around the 232 , best was a 238.

Doesn't running a 190 on a 5.5 rim pinch the tyre?

Thanks bob, I'm running 15/45 with a 180. You're a fair bit lighter than me though, ill start with the 44 and if I get good enough to top that out then ill drop another tooth. For me its not the main straight thats an issue (i expect to lose out a bit there), but the two spots i mentioned where a top out 3rd. Luckily sprockets are pretty cheap so it's not a big deal to experiment with.

What corner speed are you getting tipping into T4 ? when you top out in 3rd gear .

Max speed between T3-T4 says 169 (thats banging limiter) and corner entry says 98.

I'm no pro nor anything but I reckon that if the Pirellis fit a 5.5 rim on STK600/WSS, they should fit the rim on my bike too!

They do this year but it used to be a 190 if I'm not mistaken

You'd be surprised about the actual width of various tyres, remembering that the profile plays a part too, along with tyre design in general (sidewall stiffness etc). Fourex ample, the Dunlop 190/55 GPAs are 188.5mm wide, whereas the 190/60 are 191.3mm.

Bigger differences are with some of the other tyres - the treaded GP rear (UK treaded) in 200/55 are only 191 wide (ie narrower than the 190 GPA). The Buffalo (US ntec slick) in a 190 are 188.5, but only 194 in a 200. And the awesome UK ntec rear slick in a 195 are actually only 191, BUT they are super high, so often don't fit in the swingarm without a new, longer chain!

On the front, the 125/80 Buffalo are narrower than the 120/70 KR106 (118 v 119). But then again, the UK 211GP treaded in 120/70 is 119, but the US 211GPA in the identical size of 120/70 is 123.

So there ya go! It's not all about the number stamped on the sidewall.
