View Full Version : Next track/race bike build - it's GREEN!!

Marshy

Shock horror!! I suddenly realised that I've become everything I've scorned over the past 20 years and I now own a Kawasaki!! It's never happened before, so I don't really know what to expect.

This is a track/race bike project build, not my next racebike. But I am looking forward to trying it out ;)

Almost no damage - a tiny ding in the swingarm behind the muffler, a scrape on the right fork foot, and the rest is minor fairing damage. The tank is unmarked, as is the frame and the subframe. It still has untouched hero blobs!

As picked up:

Marshy
09-08-2013, 09:05 PM
I'm actually kinda liking working on it, if I'm honest. There are a few things that are soooooo dumb (don't get me started on the humongous axle hex nut fiasco, or the split pins on everything, or the dumbass 'dry break' clips), but there's some nice touches too (heat shielding under the tank and on the top of the airbox, the ease of access once the tank is off, the excellent steering damper/fuel tank mounting system).

Mr.Ed
09-08-2013, 10:50 PM
Wait to you do an oil filter change and then you decide what you'd like to call 'dumb'... :mmph:

I do like the almost indestructible faring stay though!

CLIFFY
10-08-2013, 04:31 AM
That's the only thing that I preferred on the gsxr, but isn't the r6 oil filter in the same shitty position as the zx6r?

Marshy
10-08-2013, 06:34 AM
Nah, the R6 filter is more accessible than the ZX6. It's still a bit of a pain to get to, but it's much easier. You can easily get a metal-ring filter wrench on the R6, unlike the kwaka, by the looks.

The kwaka has clearly just been serviced (new oil, filter, brake fluid etc). And they've done everything up massively over-tight with a rattle gun, by the feel of it. My money is on this being the reason it got crashed. It really makes you wonder about some mechanics.

Little Mick
10-08-2013, 06:36 AM
Actually I find the oil filter location and undercatch tray quite tidy...just slip in a bit of thin Cardboard or foil under the end of the catch tray and you dont make a mess....

My old R6 on the other hand has nothing and mess is part of the game...

Also, you can see all the lockwiring on the sump plug and the oil filter with the fairings on....Still upsets the scrutineers if you dont take them off, but a quick inspection is easy...

The front sprocket chain guard is a bit awkward to jiggle out if you have race pattern, but it means 2 minutes instead of 1.25....

You can also (with a little bit of practice) remove/ replace the front wheel by just removing the front guard and not taking the calipers off.

Plenty of stuff I could go on about :smokin:

Mr.Ed
10-08-2013, 01:10 PM
Sorry, will never agree with the filter position. Ever. lol

Little Mick
10-08-2013, 01:40 PM

Mr.Ed
10-08-2013, 05:48 PM
I wish... whoever designed that never had to it with the bike on the race stands. It's all fun and games when bike sits at eye level but when you have to change the oil whilst holding a piece of cardboard/tilfoil (that alone spells bad engineering for me - then again, I'm not an engineer) in one hand and the container on the other, you start to wonder if the guy who decided where the oil filter would go had ever changed the oil himself. Ever.

I've used both methods (cardboard/tilfoil) and I still find it messy... in fact, these days I use neither. I use a milk bottle I cut in half so it works as a sort of funnel and to be honest, it still sucks. It's the sort of problem I didn't have on the 600rr or the R6 I owned before and even though I believe the ZX6R is a better bike than both, the oil filter position is ridiculous.

Marshy
10-08-2013, 05:58 PM

Wondering why it's a stat? Doesn't take much these days. Small imprint in the swingarm from the muffler, and a scrape on the fork foot (plus of course the fairing scratches etc).

Little Mick
12-08-2013, 06:34 AM
Eds right Marshy... and dont go for traditional settings of Sag etc...I made that mistake when I got mine but the front was too stiff for the rider and by increasing the rear sag, the front wouldnt turn. The manual says the springs are set up for a 68kg rider....well with gear and everything that would be me...I run 2 turns of preload on the front as compared to the 4 they recommend and I barely get 90mm of travel.. those a little heavier might have slightly different experiences.

Are you going to run stock gearing?

No, but I'm having terrible trouble getting the front sprocket off, even with my rattle gun at full power. I've just ordered a $1k compressor, which should take care of it. MORE POWAH!!!

http://www.solvencyiinews.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/morepower.png

Little Mick
20-08-2013, 04:06 PM
I did too Marshy... secret was to take it to a local mechanic (automotive) an use their 3/4" drive rattle gun..Super cheap also have 750mm breaker bars which may help in getting it off..

Mr.Ed
20-08-2013, 04:17 PM
Yep, I believe that's where Godzilla works now that he's no longer making movies... tightening front sprockets at Kawasaki. Oggy and I gave it God knows how many tries with his suppa duppa compressor and got NOTHING. I tried it at home with a mate using an incredibly long lever and gave up 'cause it was starting to get too dangerous. Then had a certain green mechanic try it and even he struggled with it but managed to remove it in the end.

The word on the street is 15-44 @ EC and 14-44 @ WP.

Also, personally, I'd suggest to go with a 190 rear.

Mr.Ed
20-08-2013, 04:22 PM
Also, put some tank protectors on it... cheap insurance for a bike that has a tank almost as exposed as the R6's one.

Little Mick
20-08-2013, 05:30 PM
me too Jamie- need to have gearbox in Neutral... and stand on the rear brake (doesnt always hold) or place a 4x2 and rags throught wheel (prefer the brake with the big impact)....

even after it has been removed, they are a bitch to remove....

chubb
20-08-2013, 06:40 PM
I prefer the 4x2 through the wheel with a rattle. I just use a 18v mikita cordless.. no space for kompressor.

I also purchased some fold up levers.. keen for them to be fitted!!

Mr.Ed
20-08-2013, 09:31 PM
Yep. I'm all for parts that allow you to keep going... fold up levers and those folding toe pegs are a must if you tend to lean over your bike more than you should.

Are you talking about my ever reliable (touchwood) unofficial championship winning Suzuki? ;) I can't fault the old girl, and what a hard worker. I'm so attached to that bike.
Just needs a little more horsepower to stay with the big boys at the Barry Sheene event.

Maybe I should build a 600 SRAD. I've got all the parts less the 600 motor.

Quick update. It looks muuuuuch better with the mid-pipe on. Did some stickers to customise it for the new owner. The front numbers were too big for the available space, so I just stuck them on the screen for giggles. I'm cutting smaller ones for the proper side area.

Nope... Might go for a look, but not to race... I will be surprised if I make the St George round. I'll be at South circuit on Monday, and would like to get close to a 60 second lap... Depends how fast I get up to speed with the bike. :)

EDIT: at the end of the Bernie day... if I can do better than last time I was on South on my 1000, I will be happy.

If you're faster on it on the first day than you were on a bike you were used to, kiss it on the mouth (ram air?) and tuck it in at night. I know I did. hahahaha But then again, I went from the R6 to it, different bikes and etc but not as different as from a 1000 to a 600.

Yeah but only just. I was sooooo close to getting into the 60 sec bracket (61 point zero-something, from memory), that it's clearly not too much of a stretch target. Besides, if these damn green machines are as good as you all are saying, it should be a walk in the park! GB will get close, as he said.

It's an unknown quantity man... maybe I won't be such a wuss on the throttle compare to my 1000?? haha And I'm comfortable kissing a motorcycle... don't have to make it weird... haha

Thanks for the words of encouragement haha I'll be happy just to get back out on the track and if I set a goal, regardless of what anyone else thinks, it's something to aim for, if I don't make it this time around... then I'll go back... if I don't make that time, I'll go back, so on and so forth...

Marshy what kind of bolts/pins/majiggas did you use for those 2 to attach the under tray to the duck tail? mines just zip tied to the subframe out of the way at the moment. Functional but not pretty as it leaves a big gap lol

Marshy
10-10-2013, 08:53 PM
I use wellnuts, for there and for most places in the tail section (separate undertrays on many bikes, to attach to the subframe, and to attach to the seat support on bikes that have them). I lightly glue the wellnut rubber into place first.

These ones: http://kurveygirl.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=277
