Thanks fellas. This one is for selling, not for keeping - I love my Aprilias waaaay too much to be going back to Yamahahaha (or any non-BEARS, non-cross-entry bike).

But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to doing some fast laps on it!!! ARDC, if the planets align.

You kept that bloody quiet Nick!

Only got it yesterday afternoon! It came pre-disassembled.... partly from the insurance assessment, presumably, but it also looks very much like it was being carefully disassembled to drop the motor. Gearbox recall, maybe? Your guess is as good as mine. It's only had a minor slide on the left. Hardly any damage at all. A couple of scrapes on the stator cover, a broken clipon and lever, and a broken footpeg. Oh, and some light rash on the front wheel.

It lives! Well, the dash lights up anyway. It's not quite reassembled enough to start. 8k kms, and all highway/freeway kms too, because the rear tyre is flat in the middle and not worn on the edges. And besides, it's waaaay too clean to have done 8k city kms.

Does anyone else think Mr Yamahahaha intended the cat to be removed on the new R1?

Ti headers, but SS mid-pipe and cat/collector, and not one-piece but easy to separate without grinding etc. Tops. Dan Moto mid-pipe arrived in record time. Nice workmanship on these things (although not so much with their mufflers, in my experience).

So, with all the Aprilia action recently, WeR1 has been feeling a little unloved. She needed some zorst gaskets and nuts, as they were nowhere to be found. New filters too (oil and air).

The rear wheel is straight and true, but the front was a bit weird.... it span dead straight on the balancer, but still didn't feel quite right. Checked out the bearings and they were almost completely locked up. Very very hard to get them to move, and when I did they were notchy. Ordered some from Yamaha, but it turns out they are a new size and not in stock in Australia. I pulled them out tonight to measure them to search for replacements, only to discover that they were fine! The front wheel nut had been done up to roughly 7,000 newtons, and had squeezed the bearings onto the internal spacer, and they couldn't move. Don't overtighten your front axles, peeps.

http://tarmactalk.com/images/wer1-17.jpg

Having found 6 out of the 8 exhaust nuts, and with new gaskets, it was time to get the radiator and oil cooler in position, and get the exhaust mounted. After taking the exhaust on and off countless times (I'd forgotten how fiddly Jap bikes can be) to get the various little brackets mounted to the motor, and to run the water pipes in and out of the headers etc etc, it's all finally taking shape!! It's ready for oil, and almost ready for water too.

Awesome bike, this R1 !! Just amazing. It could've been geared a bit shorter, and yet it was still even more punchy off turns than the Aprilia, and it has unbelievable power all through the rev range. Honestly, it pulls like a randy schoolboy from corner exit to rip-your-arms-off revs. I have no idea how Mr Yamahahaha achieves this feat. It's very small, feels very light, and turns very very well. It's farken loud too ;)

Only did a session on it, and there's a few teething issues to sort out... the quickshifter didn't work for some reason, and the brakes were pretty ordinary (new fluid needed, I reckon). But otherwise it's a fantastic machine, and if it fit in multiple classes I'd have two of 'em.

Bit of both. His brother races an R1 in FX, and this bike will be a wet/spare bike for his brother's racing, and also as a track bike for Steve. Although WeR1 is nicer and better equipped than the racebike, so might end up being the #1 bike!!
