I just bought a '96 ZX7 with 20,000k's in immaculate condition just because I've always liked them. I took it out for it's maiden voyage today and all was good for 10km then the revs dropped and it stopped. I started it again and held full throttle which would only rev to 1500rpm. As soon as I shut the throttle it stopped again. Eventually I got home and got the trailer to pick it up and then it started and ran normally. On the second outing it did the same thing after about 10 minutes of riding. The carbs have been cleaned but it still does it. Any ideas?
Check the breather on the tank . If its blocked it will starve the engine of fuel due to vaccum , fuel used not being replaced in the tank with air .If it stops again open the fuel cap and see if it makes any difference.

Agree with Bob, Bill.
Similar to the fuel filter issue but with the air. Also listen far vacuum when you open tank. You should be able to do this in the driveway/ locally

Please forgive my lack of knowledge of all things mechanical but is the breather a tube attached to the bottom of the tank? My guru, Rick, is away for a couple of weeks so I'll have to self help on this one.

I hope so. I ran it in the garage for 40 minutes and couldn't get it to happen. Thanks to everyone for the help and if you see a red and purple ZX7 stopped on the side of the road feel free to stop!

Not sure Mick, I'll lift the tank this afternoon and have a look. I just want to take the bloody thing for a spin but not have to walk 5k's back home to get the trailer.
