View Full Version : FXRRC RND 3 - This Sunday
Who's in? Gloria kindly messaged me yesterday chasing up my entry that was yet to be sent in so filling that out this afternoon.
Little birdy told me Owen might be making the trip for his first race since 'The Unpleasantness'.
Weather looks cold but dry. Should be a good un!

when painting yellow top coats .... ALWAYS ALWAYS apply a couple of white coats first, then yellow .... why?
if no white base, it'll take more coats of yellow to cover the "grey primer" (say 4 or more coats depending on a few different varying factors, like, viscosity or acrylic or enamel, for example), than opposed to applying 2 coats of yellow over the white base coat, giving you 100% coverage with less top coats applied.

Red Kote's great stuff ;-)

Good advice. When I started painting I was thinking it would have been easier going over white than grey. Oh well, now I know for next time. I have another can so not a disaster but definitely would have been easier!

Was a great day out except a fair few crashes. Track seemed to have plenty of grip everywhere except where the water was seeping up through the track on t4.I had an okay day marred by horrific starts of course. Ended up with first in d grade (only due to a malfunction for Carl) and a new natsoft pb finally cracking into the 5s last lap of the day.

Well an interested day to the least....
Started out with the tyre warmers indicating they were -0.2 degrees....
The tap above said it all.....
The day started late due to the fog rolling in and was cut down to 3 races per group.
So the plan was simple... take it easy and stay upright...how hard could it be right????
The plan was working well in qually..... best lap of 1:20 (very cautious)....no drama - second row of the grid... the 300s were gridded up behind us with an extra spacing on the grid.
Race 1:
Outing lap and everything was sweet...go for the warm up start and the flag dropped. Got a great launch...but...the whole front row didn't move...not enough space to get through so pulled it up and we all got moving again...
Race start wasn't so grand... I bogged off the start, near stalled and caught it in time to get moving. Was thinking of Owen's incident and didn't want to hang around.
Managed to tuck in behind Dan into t2 and we were all marching around the track.... I got to T5 and we were all bunched up...not sure if I touched Dan's rear wheel or if I was on the bump leaned over due to the congestion, but I was sliding to the outfield with a group of 300s bearing down on me (which I had forgotten about)... was working out ok and they were avoiding me till I slid in the path of one of the young guys who couldn't avoid me... I felt the thud and remembered the 300s....
Bike flipped over as it got to the outer ripple strip and I rolled around a bit. Managed to get up ok and waved to the kid on the 300 who was now on the grass that I was ok and pointed to the track to get going again... Took a look at the bike laying there and It looked about 4 times heavier that it actually is.... I decided to leave it and head to the outfield and let the lights manage it...
damage was limited to a broken clip on and rear set...
I had my spare bike for parts and a bucket of goodies I threw in at the last minute. Replacement rear set and clip on sorted for next race....
Race 2:
Warm up start was good and all felt well around the track..
Race start was ok as well and we were off around the track. Pace wasn't there but we were at least pointing in the right direction...
Dan overtook me into T8 and I chased him around the track but couldn't keep up....
I got around to T8 and was going fine. I must have run into the turn a bit late and as I was tipping in I must have gone just off line and lost the front... back into the mud we go....
pushed the bike out of the way and waited for a pick up...
damage limited to a broken rear peg (same one from the first race).
once I got back in the shed, I noticed a decent rip in the leathers... on thinking back it was most likely where the 300 hit me as talking to the kid afterwards, he said that his forks hit me so that explains the rip..
All in all, only some very minor bruising and some minor repairs to the bike and leathers. Helmet appears to have escaped unscathed although I was sure I felt it scrape but appears it must have been in the mud..
didn't bother with race 3 as the leathers were in need of repair and Id had enough.
We had 6 in our garage and 3 of us went down... Hamish was out in Qually and Bill in one of the races.
track was ok and generally a good day out, just not one of my better days...
but such is life.. and I got away lightly...
more time in the shed...
cheers
Mick

my day was a lot better than Micks, Hamish and Gavin's and all the others who towed home damaged bikes :-(
3 wins from 3 races and my fastest lap on the last lap of the last race a 1.02.8 well down on my January PB but with water at turns 2,4, and 10 forcing some creative lines it wasn't to bad

Average and interesting day for me. Decided to pack dads bike just in case on saturday, you know just in case... qually was crappy, chased setup and did a 1:09 to get 8th. very slippy etc etc.
1st race, fired up the shia motivation (owen knows this far too well) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuHfVn_cfHU
Great start as seems to be the norm now (very happy), fought my way through to 5th on the first 2 laps and stayed there. Currently 1st in D grade 600cc.
2nd race got a great start again up to 4th by t1, throw out a low 1:06 (very good times for me) and kept it for 3 laps. going onto the back straight i hit the bumps and .......... BLOODY CHAIN COMES OFF!!! shit. pull in and its broken the front sprocket, rear sprocket, chain, oil filter and just brushed the cases. (damage to be confirmed but the cases look ok) 2nd race dnf, bike stuffed. so now i have a 1st and a 0 Binksy took 1st in D grade.
Hmmmmmmmm lets get dads bike out.
quick dirty preload adjustment on dads bike to get it sorta ok-ish. practice start. big ass wheelie getting used to dads clutch and his wonky bars. fair nuff, lets start this bloody thing properly.
Good start, up to 7th and in front of binks... wooooo binks gets me on lap 3 cant get him back. Brake lever folds down on me, gear lever is too high, seat is horrendous but dads bike is faaaasstt and the suspension is close enough. battle on the last 2 laps to keep 8th and 2nd in D grade. did a 1:08 on an outta wack new to me bike.
Didnt hang around for trophies just to get home before dark but it seems as tho i may have gotten 3rd in D Grade 600s ?? time to get this bike fixed for the 4 hour. :D

I had a great day too! Great banter down on pit lane and good to see so many friendly faces out in the cold!
Sorry to see the folks that did come off, hope that the repair bills come in cheap Mick!
Well done to Msteveo, Carl-52, Binksy and dan for the silverware. There was some great racing, you guys were all looking great out there!!
Mark would have had time to stop for a coffee and still take out the top spot! :thumb:
I wasn't setting the world on fire with lap times and I discovered I'm still pretty firmly in the injured camp as my leg was giving me hell.
The lower body work I had been doing, to stop me loading up the bars and my duff shoulder, is working!!
...BUT it's highlighted a fair bit of weakness where my leg muscle was cut for the titanium rod :frusty:
Happily Spilly was there to help out with some dodgy under-the-counter medication, that took the edge off and allowed me to stay out for the rest of the day.
The mission for the day was to start a race without requiring a helicopter evacuation - mission accomplished!:cool:
The practice starts component of RYM is fantastic. I only wish I'd known about it sooner!!
There's a theory session where they go through the lights/flags sequence etc and they give you an idea of what you should be aiming to do with throttle/clutch etc.
Their advice was to hold revs/biting point just before the peak power band of whatever machine you were on.. good advice!
After that, a whole session devoted to gridding up then launching the bike. Thanks to a whole host of great tips from Stu, Carl, Dan, Marshy and Stevem I had plenty of things to try.
Happy to say that armed with this knowledge, everything that I tried worked great with no wheelies or STALLS :thumb:
Some things worked better than others but having so many opportunities to practice, I was able to settle on a system that worked every time and was predictable.
I would seriously recommend RYM to anybody looking for more start practice or looking to get in to racing. The whole process is is very straightforward and with double spaced grids, there's really no safer way to get to grips with race starts. :thumb: :peace:

Pretty good day for me yesterday, taking 1st in Retro 600 D-grade. It's a bit off-putting when you have to wait for ice on the track to melt before you can start riding though haha. Best time for the day was a low 1.07, so pretty happy considering the conditions.
Qualifying was pretty slow and steady, just scoping the track out trying to find the slippery patches and level of grip available. Though since a modest 1:14 got me second spot (behind the crazy fast motard) everyone was obviously just as cautious.
Race 1
I'll admit Mick that I was one of those who paused on the practice start for the first warm-up lap, just wasn't focusing I think. Not sure why the rest of the front row didn't take off though  Got a great race start, heading into T2 in first. Rodney and the motard squeezed past at turn 4 and I managed to hold position in-front of the S1000 to take 3rd outright.
Race 2
Rodney got a better start and I followed him into T2. The motard got past again at T4, pushing me a bit wide where I hit a patch of water mid-corner which sent me into a bit of a slide, freaked me out a bit. There was another slippery patch on the entry into T5 which had me worried that a bike had possibly dropped fluid (it hadn't but that was enough to put me off for the rest of the lap). Lines were pretty sloppy and the S1000 blasted me down the main straight. Couldn't get back in a groove so he got away from me a bit where I finished behind him in 4th.
Race 3
Slightly eventful start, with me and the motard bumping together shortly after the start. I copped his barkbuster across the shoulder and lost my toe-slider from hitting something else on his bike. I don't think he was too pleased as he pushed through at the apex of T2, forcing me wide. I ended up behind the S1000 again and would gain through the corners but would get smoked down the straight. Needed a few more laps to close the gap so ended up 4th overall again.
Mick - Looking back through my footage looks like you lost the front turning into T5 in the first race. I wonder if it was the same slippery patch that kept catching me out.
It was a shame to hear Dan was having some serious bike issues, so hopefully you get the old girl fixed for the next one.
Little Mick
20-07-2015, 07:09 PM
Geoff- I was behind you for the start but rod didn't move either and I didn't see the others move... maybe I was just too keen....
would be great if you had rear footage of my spill... I don't remember being close enough to touch Dan's back wheel let alone touching it, and probably more off line in the congestion...
old mate on the tard was on a mission... not sure what class he fell into but he went past me at the beginning of qually and again at the end.... I think his qually time was 1:08
