View Full Version : Phillip Island Pirelli RR 28-30 August

Marshy

Plans are well under way for this year's sojourn to the Mexican Mecca of Motorcycle Racing, the Pirelli RR Series Phillip Island round at the end of August.

I was a late scratching last year, but the year before was a top weekend away! There were a zillion of us from here in a bunch of neighbouring townhouses, and many good times were had by all.

So in keeping with tradition, it's on again. Who's in??

Bit worried ... haven't race PI for over 3 years (and was sick at that one) and can't justify going down for Friday ... will be busy with only 2 qualies (all but 1 back to back) to get gearing right - actually pulled out a ride height adjustment I was going to trial and will leave that to Broadford where I know the track better - unless the race order is broken up (or maybe try it in the warmup Sunday) -

AND Also thinking about bring some road tyres (Bears F5 no wets no slicks - of course Supercorsas are a slick really) has anyone going down got experience in cutting slicks (and a tool)

Meh, I haven't raced PI in over 30 years!
Out of interest, what are you reading in to the "Tyre make and type are open for all classes. Wets may be used by all classes if it is declared WET" from the supp regs?
I've emailed and asked them to clarify whether the GCRs for my class or the above are applicable.

I'm in a championship battle against a bike with 10-20% more HP 3 rounds of4 legs left PI Broadford and EC with 15points difference

You can use any tyres you like even wets if it Wet ... trouble is for me the BEARS sub regs say F5 "on treaded street tyres" so the so called road legal (cough cough - quote from Link - wouldn't suggest using them on the road working temp over 50C) Supercorsas are ok but wets are right out

What benefit will cutting a slick have? Still wont be a "treaded street tyre" as it's not DOT approved or am I missing something?

Not planning to cut a slick but cut an almost slick ... more tread on a Supercorsa

More interested than anything else but surely no matter how many grooves are in a Supercorsa it's going to suck nuts in anything but full dry? Isn't wet/damp grip more compound dependant than tread (until you actually get to the point of standing water and aquaplaning)?

Land to Sea ratio is important (cos it not only clears water it gives some rubber movement to warm the tyre) ... that said they're not bad in the wet at MacPark I ride at about 95% but it special (massive grip) ... and I use a cast offs on the rear of my road bikes (not game on the front)

A suppose what I should be asking is what is the Wet grip level like at PI since the resurface

So, the GCR's, for Supersport at least, have changed in regards to tyres. We can now run anything and are not restricted to the treaded tyres from before. Happy days!! The only stipulation is that you need to be on Pirelli to qualify for prizes.
Also, not sure if everybody already knows this but you also have to have your front sprocket covered, if it's exposed enough that a finger could get caught. I had to Macgyver a sprocket cover at the last minute. Other than that tho, I reckon I'm ready to go racing!! :peace:

This is club racing "supersport" .... IMHO .... here just means 600cc 4s 675 3s and 750 2s .... but I was wrong once before

And you're wrong again Linden. 2 years ago at the Pirelli RR round at Winton, I got disqualified from qualifying (having qualified 3rd of 40-ish) for running slicks and had to start both of Sunday's races from the back of the grid. Which completely ruined my race results, as you can imagine. Not only that, but between qualifying and the first race, I had to buy a set of treaded Pirellis, have them fitted, get them on the bike, warmed up, and then race on a tyre type and brand I'd never ridden on before. It was a weekend to forget, simply because I misread the supp regs, which said "tyres are open", and then later on in the class descriptions, it said "Supersport: as per the GCRs". The GCRs, of course, said Supersport must run DOT tyres.

And don't get me started on the nazi enforcement of the race number font, size, colour and kerning done at the Pirelli rounds. Don't check lockwiring, but carry around a cutout template to check font size and spacing (I'm not making this up). If it wasn't Phillip Island, I'd never run in the Pirelli series again. Honestly, they have some right dickheads all smug about having the power to completely ruin someone's weekend with bizarre enforcement of the most arbitrary of rule minutia, not in the slightest bit related to safety.

It may well have turned out to be a weekend to forget for me too, if the actual MA GCRs for Supersport tyres hadn't only just changed this year!

So Vic its Number checker
In NSW its Camera Checker

In NT it was Cartons ... at riders briefing maybe 6 mentions of cartons ... to put in context "Ok if you need a pickup due to out of petrol ... that will be 1 carton!"

Other memory was at Riders briefing in shorts an thongs ... think next Rider Briefing will be a bit cooler

There was one injury when a dude stalled on the front row of the start line during the Bears race, and Perini clipped him. Broken leg for the dude, but otherwise ok. Both bikes just had broken footpegs.

On again off again rain all day. Rode the wet bike all day, and it was tops!! Pouring rain sometimes, and virtually dry track at other times, but not quiiiite dry enough for slicks.

Swings and roundabouts, as with anything. The Ape is sooooo good at corner speed, lean angle, and power-down on exit. I still reckon the ideal bike would be the 2015 RSV4 with the APX2 electronics. But that's $33k plus. So I'm just very much enjoying a change.

I ran wide on the exit of Siberia, wasn't gonna make the turn, so stood it upright and ran off (at speed!!) onto the very wet and very muddy grass!!!! Managed to keep it upright, but by the time I coasted to a stop, I was right next to the tyre wall, and I thought it would be nice to lean the bike against the tyres and sit on the tyre wall and quietly empty my undies!!! ;)

Actually, I thought about rejoining, but I would've had to cross 100 metres of the same wet grass, then rejoin at the Hayshed, at walking pace, with very muddy slicks. With bikes going past at 200kph. On reflection I thought it was better to wait it out. Nice view of the race!

Cade Simpson was the rider hit ... as I was (as usual) starting from the back I watch it happen ... was off the throttle by the bridge knew it would be flagged

Over all I'm mixed about the weekend ... when it rained on Saturday was hopping to beat my competition in the BEARS F5 championship (who normally is crap in the wet) but he brought his A++ Game and I couldn't come to terms with the Supercorsas (the Dot cut slick road tyres) and PI in the WIND (the wet was fine-ish ...) - spent the weekend being smashed by HP was slowest bike by some 10kmh (100behind the big boys)

+ while fun a couple guys in different formulas mucked me up a bit (killing my best catching points Honda and MG)

Now 23 points behind with 2x4 legs to go and loosing hope of a win (if I can 4 from 4 at broadford .... maybe - will still need to beat HP 3 out of 4 at EC)

My weekend never really got off the ground, I was pretty sick in the lead up week and actually burped a bit of sick into my mouth in the first session on Friday. I was on used tyres from the Creek but by the third session the track was starting to make sense and I did 3 x 1.42.2 's in a row, then in the afternoon the temp dropped off a bit more and was back in the 43's but doing it much easier. My wife Sue came down sick on Friday afternoon ,same as I had , knowing what she was in for we were tossing up what to do .She stayed in bed and I went racing but thinking in the back of my head we really don't want two messed up people a 1000 km from home and a bent bike. Saturday the weather was close to dry then rain enough to rule out slicks. I ended up sitting out qually and the first race then thought stuff it and put the wets on. My first race was the superbikes and started from the back of the grid and got up to 7th over the 4 laps. The second race was Oz bears from the back again I got a good start but the race was red flagged . The restart I didn't get away quite as well but got up to 4th by lap 4, 1.9 seconds off the leaders. I was looking forward to having a crack at them in the last race but it was cancelled for that day. The following morning Sue's health was no better so we pulled the pin and headed home to play another day. That was the first time I have ridden there in 27 years , (1988 was the last time ) It wont be that long till I'm back again.

cool vid Nick how are you liking the beemers? do you think you will be quicker on these than the ape?

Im surprised how quick that Ducati 996-998(?) is for such an old and underpowered bike against the latest and greatest from germany. It seemed like he put up a pretty good fight in the first few laps.

The old saying... its not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.
